Reverse 911 call this a.m.

What a way to wake up. The fire dept placed reverse 911 calls at 6:15 this morning advising that a house the next street over has exploded, and it is very possible that natural gas has seeped into the local aquifers (we're on water wells here). Last week, the police dept water well caught on fire - police dept is about a mile from here. Natural gas co representatives are to go house to house in this area this weekend to check each home and each well.

I'm supposed to host a Christmas party tonight. Would you still have the party - or get busy making phone calls to cancel?

If they did the reverse 911 at 6:15 I've got to think it's rather serious, although perhaps they knew chances were really good that everyone would at least be home to get the message that time of day. Any thoughts? TIA

So I drove by on the way home from DD's basketball game. Couldn't see much - even after at least 6 hours after the fact there are still fire trucks, a red cross van, and a couple of ambulances that have the road blocked off. Hmmmmm - what to do.

I'll probably get flamed but I couldn't just let this go.

Six hours after the explosion and there are still emergency vehicles there including ambulances?? I'm sorry but my first thoughts would be prayers and concern for the people involved and not for my party.

Even if no one was injured those people just lost everything.

The holiday season has turned into a busy, social time and less time is spent remembering the real reason behind the holiday, but caring about our fellow men should never be put second--at any time of year.

Flame away.

I live near Lorrie and just read a news article saying there were no injuries from the explosion.

Nadine, I see your point, but I think that Lorrie is just being practical and wondering what to do since she is having company tonight and doesn't know whether or not they should come if there is an emergency situation.

I understand the reasons behind Lorrie wondering whether to cancel her party or not. Of course her guests' safety is at the front of her mind.

I'm so glad no one was injured. But still, someone's life has changed horribly, and will never be the same. I just find it sad what first thoughts people have in today's world.

Just my 1000 cents.

Nadine,

With respect, I don't think it's fair to assume that Lorrie's first thoughts were about her party. In fact, based upon Lorrie's thoughtful posts here, I doubt that was her first concern. However, at some point, she needed to address the issue of whether or not she should call off the party, and I think she came by here for "second" opinions.

Hey all - back here. I should have mentioned that I verified there were no injuries (sorry Nadine) - I have some ties to fire and emergency response personnel. I'm pretty sure the ambulances were in case of fire dept personnel injuries as they were still there investigating - they have to be on standby. I am HUGELY concerned about the vast other families in the area - that's why I mentioned about the police dept well burning last week. Also the potential environmental impact. We families in the area and the local red cross will help the familiy displaced by this - we already have a drive going. But how many others are in the line of this apparent natural gas spread? I see law suits waiting to be filed when the reverse 911 calls weren't made post police well fire, and now another family has been hit.

You're right, that's true and I shouldn't have assumed. I just found it interesting that her post came 37 minutes after the Fire Dept. called, and there was no mention about the people whose house was destroyed.

Regardless, the state of the world and the mindset of society still makes me sad. I am praying for those who lost their home and for everyone in that area who might be affect by the gas leakage. It makes me remember what could so easily happen, and be thankful.

I'm sorry Lorrie. I guess I am so used to how many people jump to selfish thoughts right of the bat, that I assumed you did too. That was wrong, please forgive me. I guess I am not as immune to society's grasp as I thought I was since I think the worst of everyone. Not a good way to be--I'll be working on that.

It's really nice that you and your neighbors are helping those poor people. I truly hope that your community personnel can find this leak quickly so that you're all safe and can rest easy. I also hope that you are able to re-schedule your party.
