Revelations from my first run of the year

midnight

Cathlete
Yep, I finally got my butt out of the house and did my first run of the year. For some reason, I always have trouble getting out to do that first run!! Anyway, here are some revelations that came to me:

1. I bought the right running shoes. ASICS GT-2100 in a wide width. Nice cushioning but not too much that they feel mushy. They still look too new though.

2. Lower body weight training has made a huge difference in my muscular endurance. I was able to run the distance I left off at last fall with absolutely no undue fatigue and probably could have run longer. The Cathe effect strikes again.

3. I also can run faster than I could last year. Must be the increase in aerobic capacity from all those "blasts" plus the weight training.

4. I really need an IPod

The techie folks say the IPOD isn't really supposed to be used for serious exercising because it has moving parts which can be affected by excessive movement. I was about to get one myself when I read this. So I got an MP3 player instead. An MP3 player has no moving parts, so you don't have to worry about it.

Just a thought for you.

Lois...good for you!!! I love running outdoors myself...:)...Did you know Saucony makes running shoes in wide widths too? That is awesome Cathe has helped you so much. I feel weight training for a runner is so important, especially as we age.

I've never run with any music...I love music but I want to be able to hear my surroundings...especially the dogs in my neighborhood...Congrats on your 1st run...:)...Carole

I'm with Carole on the running with music. Depending on where you run of course, it can be very dangerous not to be able to hear your surroundings.

I have to watch for traffic, construction vehicles (still building new homes in my neighborhood), deer and dogs. It scares me to think about not being able to hear what's behind me, or approaching me. Please reconsider! :)

Yay! Good for you lois :) I have an ipod and a arm band to put it in and I use it to jog all the time. I have had it for 18 months and no problems with it. My son is a techie and he bought it for me. Greatest gift I ever got. I love my ipod!

Terri

The danger factor isn't there for me as I use it on the treadmill or around a park. I never jog where traffic is.

My 12 yr old has an iPod and I am trying to negotiate with him to let me put a file of running music on it. So far, no luck. There's something wrong when the 12 year old has an iPod and the parents don't (although he bought it with his own money)!!

I've never been a runner (well, not after I screwed up a knee trying to be a runner when I was 19!), but I used to walk a lot. I'd bring a walkman (it was back in the day!), and listen to music, but I'd put the earphones not directly over my ear (I don't like music blasting directly into my ear, even if it's soft), but in front of my ears, so I could hear it (at the lowest volume that let me hear it), but I could also hear whatever else was going on. You can't do that with the new-fangled "in the ear" earpiece headphones, though.

I don't take music when I run for the awareness factor AND because I love to hear my ragged breathing and my feet pounding.:)

I use an iPod shuffle for running. It's super tiny and works great for running. It's a lot easier than using the regular sized iPods. I'm glad you enjoyed your run, that's great!!!

Congratulations on your first attempt in runnning, good running shoes are a plus, and if music helps try it, it helps me, I have tried to hear my breathing and feel it, but I just cant, I love music all the time, so I run with music, my fav songs, mozart sometimes, and high energy aerobic too, whatever inspires me, take advantage of your strong legs due to hard work and enjoy running, some folks would love to run but they just can't, so be happy with your skill and use it!

I did my first run on Saturday on the boardwalk, which was great b/c there are no hills or twists or turns LOL. But I was definitely feeling it, especially in my hams, the next day.

I use an armband radio when I run. I cannot stand running w/o it--it's just so darn boring! Better scenery down the shore I guess, but still, I need something to distract me from the suffering. :p

LOL! My biggest excuse for running is so that my hubby can buy me a MP3 player. It's the only reason I decided to start running. (My hubby has to see a need for it, before I can get it). After I get it I'll more than likely stop. }(

Sounds exactly like my DH!! All major expenses must be justified.
I'd be happy with an MP3 player instead of an ipod!

Ran 5 miles yesterday and did a segment of StretchMax afterward. No soreness today!! :)
