Resting heart rate question?

What is your resting heart rate and how low is too low? I often will do mine at night when I lay down in bed.. Mine is usually 50-52, but last night it was 48!! I just feel like that seems really low. I have a bedside clock so when I do mine I just count for the entire mintue so I know it's accurate. Is this normal?

Hey Trish,

Mine is usually around 58. I had a procedure done last fall in the hospital and when they had started my IV and I was just laying there relaxing waiting, my heart rate dropped in the high 40's. The anesthesiologist was in there at that time and I told him that I was a distance runner and also very physical active with aerobics, weight training... I just say "well that explains it then" and nothing else was done. So I don't know if your heart rate is right for you, can't make any medical judgements, I wanted to share my experience with you. Also my age is 43, I will be 44 next month.

Thank you for responding. I have been running too, but I have always ran and my heartrate has always been in the higher 50s I have been doing more weight workouts and since I discoverd Cahte I have been almost doing her workouts exclusively. I guess maybe just the added weight traning along w/ the higher intensity Cahte workouts might have dropped it down some more.

Mine was 44 the last time I went to give blood at the Red Cross and I almost got turned away for it being too low! But they asked if I worked out a lot and I said, yes everyday. So I just had a special code put on my sheet. The phlebotomist who took my blood said it was actually a good thing in someone my age and fitness level (24 years old). On the up side my iron was great though!

I am 47 and mine is in the high 40s. Not to worry. Your pulse being that low is a good thing.

I just wanted to chime in to say that my heartrate is low as well. It's always been lower than average but now after working out more seriously these days, my resting HR hovers around 45. My doctor has no problem with it at all.

The only issue I have with with it is that when I do cardio I find it really hard to get my heartrate up into the target range and keep it there. I'm happy when I have a calorie burn greater than 300 for a one hour cardio workout, which is pretty low compared to the numbers I see posted by other people.

Hwo do yo uknow what it is supposed to be? all i can find is info on how to calculate it but nothing on what is a healthy rangex(

Normal heart rates are 60-100 bpm. But athletes tend to run on the lower side. If they are very conditioned then it is perfectly normal for them to run under 60bpm. Whereas an unhealthy adult that might be running say 48 bpm would cause flags to go up. Also, some medications do tend to lower a persons heart rate.
