Rest Days - So Hard!!

Hello All!
Okay, okay, I know, I am supposed to take a rest day about once a week but gosh I find it hard to take a day off. I can rationalize that my body should take a day off but my body WANTS TO WORK! I told myself last night to take a break today but now I don't want to and am sitting here in my workout clothes thinking about KPC.
Anybody else find it hard to take a day off?

I am curious if there is anyone out there who feels the same but has disciplined themselves to take that day's rest. Did you see or feel a difference and what was it.

TIA, I'll check in after KPC}( . Maybe, just maybe, I'll take a day off tomorrow:7 Enjoy your Labour Day!!!

I very rarely take "rest days". On the other hand I have easy days and hard days. I've found that I have to do something at least for 20 min to feel alive.
Mari

Nicely put Mari "to feel alive", that's so true. I feel so fresh and exhilarated after I workout and find that when I take that rare day off I feel like the internal cobwebs need to be cleared away. Thanks for your input.:)

I have a real hard time taking days off. Like Mari, I have hard and easy days too. I feel though on the days I do Yoga that it is easier on the body than high impact aerobics and weight lifting plus you end up getting a VERY nice stretch...:)...how has your back been Laurie?....:)...Carole

Hey Carole:) My back is coming along quite nicely thanks. The very idea that I want to do KPC tells me that I'm almost there. I haven't done alot of kickboxing since April as it really challenges my sacroiliac joint but I feel ready now. I actually flopped onto my daughter's bed the other day and she pointed out that that was the first time she has seen me move like that in months. Trikonasana (triangle pose) over to the right still keeps me humble but such is life. I am so grateful to be fit and healthy. Thanks so much for asking, I'm off to kick some butt now:)

Glad to know other people have a hard time with rest days. I hate rest days. I feel like a junkie without my fix. So I rarely take a complete rest day. Just an easier day. Like maybe just doing Bootcamp or doing another not so intense cardio by someone. It feels like you are kind of wasting your bodies ability on rest days. IMHO anyway. There will be enough days to rest as we get oler and our bodies demand/make us rest ( by way of sickness, surgery etc..). My family thinks I'm a little crazy about exercise sometimes. Now I can say I'm not the only one :) :7

I am so glad you are back into the swing of things! I had seen a few of your posts on different threads and I knew you were exercising. I think being in such good shape when you get hurt does make recovery a bit faster...:)...enjoy KPC...one of my favorites...:)...Carole

Thanks Carole and Renee! I guess if we must indulge our addictive natures;-) this is the way to go:) . I'm just cooling off from KPC and feeling very, very good. I never cease to wonder at how spending energy working out allows me to have more energy to give!

I would love to hear from some other junkies who take that rest day and how it has affected you other workouts. Thanks!:)

I always take a rest day. I find I get better results (physically whent I rest). This is particulary true with lifting. I started making more gains when I began taking time off.

Strange but true.

Hi Laurie,
I used to work out 7 days a week. Even now sometimes I get up and think I would like to work out. I have found that it does not make a difference in how I feel. Mostly I can come back after a day break and have more energy for a really tough workout. I even take two days off every other week as we have been going camping on weekends. Now I do have a DVD player and a popout on our fifth wheel so there is room to workout. I just save that for a longer trip. I know how you feel. I changed things up because of labor day so I could take Monday off instead of Sunday. Now I am sitting here trying to fullfill my fitness passion with the computer. I feel like something is missing. You can adapt to a rest day. Besides it is good to keep our bodies guessing what comes next}}(

:) I bow to you all....I wish this were my problem! I have no problem with rest days!}( sighhhh......

I let way too many things mess with my motivation. You all should share some of your tips...but then, if you are already highly motivated then it may be in your nature and maybe that's where I'm comin' up short!

It is motivationing to read your posts, though, truly :)

Tend to run on and on....sorry:)

Too Cute Diane Sue, I figured it was you.:) Obviously taking a day off hasn't affected your fitness level, you look wonderful. I know that balance is key but on those days when I feel kind of sluggish it seems to help more to get the heart pumping than to take it easy. Did you find yourself getting antsy to workout when you first started taking days off? Thanks for your input.

I find that I need either a rest day (or two, depending on the intensity of my training) or a yoga/stretch day each week.

If your body wants to work, but you've done some intense training during the week, why not do a yoga or stretch workout? Or just a fun, lighter workout?

I do something everyday, but a light day for me could be yoga, stretching, or maybe just a 4 mile walk. I find that overall my workouts are better if I vary the intensity. And then some days, I just don't do anything!
Jo

Hey Laurie, remembering your quote in the Intensity Series thread, you could always do that "other" fun thing that makes you sweat on your rest days ;-)

:D ROFL!! Too funny Runninggal!!

Thanks everyone for your input. Nice to know I'm not the only one out there who doesn't necessarily rest on the 7th day. I love my yoga/pilates/tai chi days and will embrace my 'light' days as rest days.

I always try to work out every day, which sometimes means a week or more with no rest days. I have so many "unscheduled" rest days because of my/kids'/hubby's schedule that I have to get it in when I can!!!

Laurie,
Yes, I did get antsy to workout. It has taken me years, and some experience to realize that my fitness level is not going to go down hill just because I took a few days off here and there, and that I do not have to workout. I love to workout. I go to bed thinking about what I want to do next. I use my days off to accomplish other things, so I do not feel like I have missed out on anything. It is really up to the individual. I do feel like in my case, because I was experiencing osteopena, that I should cut back some on the cardio. Through medicine and calcium that has been reversed.

I try to take at least one rest day. I don't include my 2 mile walk every morning with my dog as a w/o. Yes I am a junkie too!! I just feel awful sitting around not moving. Even when the ladies and I talk about Oprah at work I always mention "while I was on my treadmill" so they don't think I just go home and sit around. I have a very active job also. It does give you some sort of relief to know there are other excercisaholics out there.
