Rest day lament

I know many of us feel "off" when we take rest days. I feel totally unproductive when I don't get in SOME kind of workout - even yoga, or walking, or something very low intensity. Yesterday was a crazy day for me, but in the end I got a lot done - laundry all done, floors scrubbed, groceries bought, grass mowed (I have an acre and a half), and the house generally put together for our picnic today. Yet when I crawled into bed last night I said to DH - "what a waste of a day - I didn't get anything done". :-( Now I KNOW I DID get those things done, but because I didn't get in that workout, I felt less productive. Can you imagine not working out? It'd make me crazy! Have a great holiday weekend all!!

Lorrie, I take 1-2 rest days a week. But if I have to take an "unscheduled" rest day, then I feel like you do. No matter what I accomplish that day, it wasn't enough. Now of course we know that life just gets in the way sometimes and we must go on. But when I know I am supposed to workout I think about it all day till its done. I think it's a healthy way of thinking. Unless of course we never allow ourselves a rest.

Lorrie:

I found I get much better results (particulary for lifting) when I take rest days. It really does work wonders.

As much as I love working out, YES, I can imagine life without it. That's what 2006 has been for me. The Year of Moving My Career Forward. No time for my favorite hobby. Oh, sure, I do a little cardio here and there just to keep my heart healthy, but I have no time or energy for my beloved weight training. I've been working out avidly now for close to 20 years, and I do miss it.

But as much as I love looking young and being in great shape, I'm finding there is something I love more. Making strides in my career is bringing me a kind of joy that even surpasses the joy of working out. Bringing in lots of new clients, feeling competent and in control, and making money is making this a great year for me! :D

Nancy sounds like you are doing great this year! I haven't been on much recently so haven't seen your posts. Congrats on the work thing. Glad its is going so well for you :)

Agree with you working out is still a part of my life but certainly not the primary objective. As always my kids are #1, I have a new job, and am doing a lot on my house.

Exercise is a stress release for me after a long day of sitting in front of a computer, so yes, I regret it when I have to take an unplanned day off. But at the same time, if something else comes up, I refuse to stress myself out worrying about how in the heck I'm going to fit a workout in. In the long run, I know it all balances out because fitness is an important part of my life.

Also, I believe that regular rest days are important. They give the body a chance to recuperate. I always schedule mine during the week, which gives the added benefit of allowing me a little more time in the evening to fix a decent meal or whatever.

Speak for yourself about life getting in the way. I had a fantastic weekend with family and friends and ended up with two unscheduled rest days. I wouldn't replace that for the world.
