Reoccuring dreams?(weird Question)

Cathlete
Does anyone else have these? It may not always be the same dream BUT it still revolves around the same thing?
I am always dreaming about my teeth!x( Which then makes me think about my teeth alot.Weird!
I had braces growing up.I am 26 now and I had them off at age 13.Thats along time to have braces off.1/2 and 1/2. The last time I went to the dentist,I had a toothache,he said that I need to get a root canal done and a crown, on one of my back teeth.I also need my wisdom teeth pulled. They aren't giving me any trouble yet but in order to get my bottom retainers off,I need them out. Then the toothache went away and I didn't go back.I don't know about you, but I always wonder if I dentist is trying to rip you off.
ANYWAY.....I have noticed over the last couple of monthes that my front tooth is turning.Which apparently happens when you get older.I don't like it.NOW I have to make an appt with my other dentist you lives 4 hours away to get a new retainer so that my teeth won't go haywire again.(This is the guy who put my braces on a lifetime ago)
I don't know if I have these dreams b/c I need to get a million dollars worth of work done, or I am just consumed with my mouth!:) Maybe if I go ahead and start getting these things done the dreams will go away?
The girls I work with checked out my dreams on the internet.Apparently when you dream that your teeth are falling out(which I do)it resembles that you are going to lose someone very close to you, and the missing teeth resmeble the emptiness that you feel! NICE!x( I just think I dream about it b/c its on my mind that I need these things done.
Anyone else dream things over and over...or am I going insane?
Lori:)
P.S...last night I had the bright idea of wearing my old retainer to bed.Its broken so I had to fix it (don't ask how)I managed to wear it alnight and now my teeth hurt.Prehaps if I keep wearing it until I get a new one, my front tooth will stop moving.See...cn you see that my life revolves around my teeth! I think I need to get a life!

I get lots of recurring dreams around certain themes, eg, babies or being washed out to sea. I don't think they are necessarily related to the thing you are dreaming about. For example, I looked up baby dreams thinking that I must be broody or something, but read that baby dreams mean that your life is undergoing a change. I think the "getting washed out to sea" dreams are about feeling overwhelmed because I got them recently when my job changed and I was feeling a big lack of confidence.

I have dreams about my teeth, where they fall out or get knocked out.

I used to get dreams about being in a car that was out of control. Like I'd be in the back seat and no one was driving.

Lately I seem to have recurring dreams about alligators. Hmmm...I think I actually had one last night, now that I'm thinking about it!

Hi Lori,

As a dental hygienist, and a psych major, here's what I can tell you. I think you are having dreams about your teeth because you know they are a source of "unfinished business"-you know you need to have things done but haven't and the dreams are your body's way of reminding you.

OK here for the professional dental opinion:

It sounds to me like you are obviously apprehensive about dental procedures in general. Although Root Canals and Crown procedures are SO much better than they used to be they may not be something you look forward to. But, if you need a root canal & crown on one of your back teeth-by all means do it. You're only given so many teeth and you need to take care of them.

I am also guessing that you do not have your teeth professionally cleaned often-you definitely should do this. This is when problems can be detected when they are small-before you get a toothache which often means that a simple filling is no longer possible. This will save you from root canals, having teeth pulled, etc. Not only this but as we get older we are more at risk for losing the bone that holds our teeth in place (gum disease) due to not getting the bacteria out from below the gumline (which only a professional cleaning can do)-I could go on and on about this one;).

As far as your wisdom teeth-it is MUCH easier to get them out now than it is later in life. Also, the field of dentistry is still somewhat divided with regards to wisdom teeth moving teeth in front of them. However, if you had braces you probably had crowding to begin with which means that you did not have room in your mouth for all your teeth at the age of 13-Therefore, you probably don't have room for them now. So it is totally understandable if your dentist would like you to have them out. Besides, why risk your teeth getting crooked again and wasting all the money and time you put into getting them straight?

Also, when we get older our teeth go through what is called "mesial drift"-they tend to move toward the midline(centered right under your nose) which will lead to crowding-It is estimated to be only a few millimeters but that can definitely affect appearance.

One of the biggest misconceptions in dentistry is the idea that just because you aren't having any pain means that something isn't wrong. People have come into our office with MAJOR problems but without pain-in fact, people can have abscesses, severely decayed teeth, oral cancer, etc. but NO pain whatsoever. Like I said before, get it fixed before something does hurt-because as you've found out-by the time it does hurt chances are you'll need something much more invasive.

However, if you are not comfortable with the dentist you are seeing, consider getting a second opinion.

The reason your teeth hurt after wearing your retainer is because you haven't worn it in a while and they have moved. The dentist I work with sometimes recommends taking what you would for a headache (Ibuprofen,etc.). But if it goes in your mouth, even tightly, you need to keep wearing it so that your teeth can move back. If you stop wearing it, your teeth will continue to move until you can no longer wear your retainer at all and you would need braces again to straighten them. At our office, we recommend wearing that you wear your retainer until you've had your second grandchild:) In other words, your teeth WILL move as you get older and wearing a retainer is the ONLY way to keep that from happening.

So, get the work done-you are too young to be having these kinds of problems. If you have any other questions please ask.

I hope that helps, Wendy:)

Thanks Wendy.I know lots of people,in lots of professions, but unfortunatly,I don't know anyone in the dentist industry...until now:)
First, I could say I was a little slack with getting my teeth,cleaned,checked,etc..b/c I didn't have much money,in my earlier years.Right now,I have no excuse, and thats why I am making numerous visits to the Dr.I just said to someone the other day, alot of people think that the dentist may be a farce b/c alot of people never go unless something is bothering them.Almost like going to the Doctor.
I have had the wisdom teeth checked out and there are only 2 that need to be removed but I think they may be on the bottom.
I know my teeth are very important and that is why I think about it alot.I know I have to get this done but I can only do one thing at a time.DH as dental insurance which is great but it will still cost be around $500 to get the root canal and crown done. Not sure what they cover for wisdom teeth.May be hard to do with christmas comming.
I am comfortable with my dentist but not b/c I don't beleive him.Its b/c he is far from personnal.Even his assitants are short for words. And silence makes me feel uncomfortable. My old dentist just moved to town so I am thinking about visiting him.
Like I said, my retainer is broken and it doesn't fit the roof of my mouth right.I can only wear it in the night time or if I am sitting around the house.Would that be o.k until I get a new one? I know I don't know when my front tooth started to move but sometimes my front tooth hurts(not alot) and I figure thats when it is trying to move. Also, you never know,I may be grinding my teeth or just biting hard while I am sleeping.I figure if I wear my retainer in the nighttime that would be enough. My retainer is the one I had right from the beginning.I think my teeth have changed alot since then, I guess if they give me a new one it will fit what my mouth looks like now, so that it won't get any worse.
My orthadontitist (I know thats not right) lives 4 hours away, its going to be hard to get there this time of year b/c of snow and icy roads.I would also have to pay for a hotel, gas and food.I figured I could just pay a dentist here to make one for me and it would cost me around the same. But no one seems to want to give me an estimate on the cost.
Thanks so much for your answers,
Lori:)
P.s
What I am trying to say is....if I wear them at night and I am pushing them back, then in the day time will they start pushing their way back out...or will they get use to where I am trying to put them?I feel like I should be wearing it all day long.Or should I just leave them alone until I get a new retainer?

Well, going back to your original question... I also have a recurring theme in my dreams involving my teeth. My upper teeth, not the ones in the very front, but the ones next to them have little or no roots. When I was an adolescent, I had oral surgery to aid with my orthodonture and teeth were moved too quickly. So since then, my X-rays are very alarming. 20 years ago (I'm 45) I was told that those teeth wouldn't last 10 years before falling out. Well, I still have them!

But for 20 years, I've often had dreams where one of my teeth falls out.

I'm a big advocate of seeing a dentist regularly. Perhaps that is why I still have all my teeth. You've been given good advice.

Diane

Hi I have several recurring dreams. One is similar to Donna's..I am either in the backseat of a moving car trying to drive it or I am in the front seat and am losing control of the vehicle. A second dream is my telephone dream. I am urgently trying to phone someone and I can never dial properly. Either I am misdialing or the buttons are not numbered correctly, or the buttons get stuck or the phone is funky and I can't figure out how to dial it. I also have two enjoyable recurring dreams. One is that I am either discovering new rooms in my home that I knew nothing about with alot of cool stuff in them including sometimes people. Another involves being in places that I feel I know very well but have never been too. When I dream these dreams I remember dreaming being there before and I rememeber the things that have happened. I refer to these as dream memories because in fact they are memories only not real ones. My most favorite dreams of all where I feel really in control are my flying dreams. I fly over the most wonderful landscapes, oceans. I know I am dreaming in these dreams but can direct them and go where I want to go.Cool thread.

I used to have dreams about flying a lot, when I was a kid.
I sometimes have dreams about losing teeth, or my teeth falling apart (a history of lots of fillings and crowns adds to this, but I'm sure Freud would have another perspective on it!).

Hi again Lori, I'm so glad I can help a bit.

I know how hard it can be financially. Dental work is NOT cheap. But I would check into your medical insurance to for helping pay to have your wisdom teeth pulled. When I had mine, I went to the oral surgeon and had them taken out - mine were impacted. So, if there is reason such as this to have them out it would be oral surgery and sometimes health insurance will cover some of it. It paid for quite a bit of mine.

Also, since you admit to being a little slack with getting your teeth, cleaned, checked, etc. make sure that you are the best brusher and flosser until you can get that taken care of-don't wait too long. Also, whenever you floss and you come across a spot that bleeds when you floss (and not because you snapped the floss in between your teeth) floss them twice as much-it means that there is a bacterial infection in there so the more you floss the quicker it will heal- But, by NO MEANS is this a substitute to having them professionally cleaned. Also, flossing will help get bacteria and plaque out from in between your teeth which can cause cavities also.

Besides, researchers are now linking oral health to heart disease, premature birth, osteoporosis, stroke, diabetes, and others. So I cannot stress how important it is to keep your mouth healthy and free of problems.

I really would consider looking into getting a new dentist-even the one you used to see if you were happy with him,or her. If yours is not personable and you don't feel comfortable there you should think about going somewhere else. There are dental offices, like mine:)) where the people are friendly and want to do what's best for you and want you to understand every step of that process without trying to rip you off. Also find out about payment plans, the dentists I work with only expects patients to pay something once a month- in fact, we have some patients who pay $10 a month because that's what they can afford and that's fine. Also, talk to friends and family and get referrals from them.

Does your retainer not fit into your mouth because it is so tight from not wearing it or is there actually a crack or break in it? But yes, the more you wear it the better even if it is only for a few hours a day. Something is better than nothing. Yes your front tooth is moving which can make it a bit sore and even feel slightly loose - it is trying to fit into your retainers which is fine. Remember, your teeth have memory and they want to go back to where they were before braces so the more you wear your retainer the better. But, basically yes your teeth will gradually move to where you are trying to put them. But, the more you wear them the quicker they will move but they will still move.

Yes you can get a new retainer that will hold your teeth where they are now. But keep wearing your retainer and see if you can get them to move that way first.

Also, next time you go to the dentist, have them check your retainers - many general dentists are perfectly capable of doing this. Also, talk to your regular dentist and see if he could make you a retainer.

You mentioned that you may be grinding your teeth. Does your husband ever mention that you do this-assuming you sleep together-they often know. Also, do you wake up in the morning and your jaw is sore or do you have headaches? Do your teeth look as though you have wore down the biting surface? Do you find yourself clenching your teeth together during the day? Are you under a great deal of stress? These are a few of the signs to look for if you are grinding your teeth.

Hope that helps, Wendy

I've had recurring dreams about broken or falling out teeth too. Apparently it's pretty common and I read an interpretation once but forget what it said.

One dream I've had my whole life is that I can comfortably do a split with my crotch on the floor and my hands in the air. I have no idea why, but the dream always makes me so happy. Because of this recurring dream, about 3 years ago when I turned 40, I set my first birthday fitness goal of being able to do one. I reached my goal that year and have been setting birthday fitness goals ever since. (I'll be 43 next month.) Who knew?

I've also had waitress nightmares (I waitressed for years in college) where the restaurant is full, I'm the only server and everyone wants something at the same time. AAAAUUUUGGGGHHHHH! I also have teacher nightmares where the class is uncontrollable or I'm completely unprepared. These dreams are pretty upsetting too.

The subconscious is a fascinating thing.

I also have dreams about losing teeth. I really hate those. But lately I have these weird dreams that I eat pastries in a pastry shop or chocolate and I can actually taste them. Now how strange is that? You can't go lower on calories though... :7 :9

Cathy - that's so weird that you have the car dream and the other dreams, because I also have the dream about dialing a phone. And I remember one dream from when I was a child where I found a new room in the house. It actually turned into a scary dream, though.

I've had flying dreams and sometimes I'll dream that I'm trying to run away from someone, but it's like I'm running under water.

Hi Wendy,
The answer to all of your last paragraph is no.I was just trying to figure out why they are moving.Just comming up with possible answers.I don't think I am a grinder.I just lay in slience:) Until I kick the sheets off of myself and DH...then he wishes he didn't have to sleep with me;)
My gums never bleed when I floss or brush. They never have.
My retainer doesn't fit b/c it seems to tight. The metal piece is broke, the part that hooks around my last tooth. My front tooth that as moved and the tooth next to it are sore.Would they really go back to how they would have been 13 yrs ago? Is their memeory that great? My teeth have probably changed more then I realize in the last 13 yrs. One of the girls I work with(bit of a ticket) had braces and her teeth are a mess.I think she is bit of a rebel and probably didn't wear her retainer. Will my teeth feel loose if I wear my retainer? I have to try to word the next question right....so say if I wear my retainer in the night time and my teeth move back, then I stop wearing my retainer again, will my teeth just go back to where they are now OR will they want to go back to their orignal place?By origanal, I mean 13 yrs ago when my mouth was a DISASTER!
I hope I made sense.
All in all, I think I have pretty good teeth.I have had the same filling for many yrs.But I want to get the work I need to get done, done. There is also no excuse b/c I can find the money and I also have the insurnace.I think I will probably need the crown first and my retainer.Later, I will get my wisdom teeth removed.
When I go to my new dentist I am going to tell him about the tooth that is bothering me.Just to see if he tells me the samething.Prehaps I just need a new filling instead. We will see.
Thanks again, off to put my retainer in..uh,I hate that thing
Lori:)

Sure, I think everyone has recurring dreams. In your case, it sounds like they are directly related to what's going on in your life.

For decades, I used to have dreams where I was on vacation and couldn't get home no matter how much I tried. They were awful. I haven't had one of those dreams in a long time though, and I'm glad of it.

I've had some horrifying dreams lately.

I have been a Scout leader for about 10 years now. My dream is that I'm on a hike with the boys but we're in some desert area, we're in different uniforms and we have guns.

Some of the young men I've worked with have aged out of Scouts. At least one has joined the military, the Marines. I am a vet myself. The merging of my past, possibly their future scares the daylights out of me.

Lori,
That is normal for those two teeth to be a bit sore. Yes your retainers will put them back where they need to be assuming you continue to wear your retainer. Otherwise they will want to continue going back to how they were before braces.(I hope that makes sense) But definitely get the retainer looked at.
Yes, the teeth that are moving because of your retainer may feel a bit loose. Do not wiggle them. They are just moving to fit into the retainer. If you wear your retainer then eventually stop wearing it - they will drift back to where they were 13 years ago. In other words to keep your teeth straight after braces you MUST wear a retainer for however long you want them to remain straight.

Keep me posted and feel free to pm me. Wendy:)

That is neat. I wonder if we have similar personalities or have had similar experiences. It's interesting to see that there are theme dreams shared by a number of folk. It got me thinking about dreams and I remembered one of the scariest that I had when I was in my early twenties. It was soon after I learned about trying to be proactive in your dreams and the first step is to recognize your dreaming. If a monster is after you you are supposed to ask what it represents etc. Since I was a kid I had this recurring nightmare about a man in his late fifties/sixties chasing me near my grandmother's house. The dream would always end the same way...I would make it into my grandmother's house via the back door and I would lock it. The man was as scary as hell to me but when I describe him..he probably won't sound scary. He had a big belly, was sloppy looking, had unkempt grayish/white hair and wore a beret. In the one dream I had which was the last time he made an appearance..I was running away again and made it to my grandmother's and as soon as I locked the door, I realized I was dreaming. I opened the door and the man was departing and was walking away from me and was in the middle of my grandmother's yard. I yelled at him to wait up and told him that I knew I was dreaming. I caught up with him and kept telling him I knew I was dreaming but that he seemed so real. I took his arm and actually could feel it in my hand. Saw the wrinkles in his face etc and kept saying I can't beleive this is a dream..everything is so vivid and I can feel and see you so clearly. I then asked him who he was and what he wanted. He said "You aren't ready to hear yet and so I am going to wake you up". Bingo, I woke up.
