Reminder: Honey We're Killing the Kids

Hey All!

There seemed to be alot of interest in this show so I wanted to remind everyone that it premieres tonight at 9pm on TLC!

Thanks for the reminder. I saw the commercial the other day and it cracked me up-lol!!! I just hope America watches and learns.

I can't wait. I don't understand the parents in denial though. They don't see that their kids are fat? (although many of the fat kids have fat parents, so like everything else, it's a learned behavior). The only thing I know will frustrate me is listening to the parents say "my kids will only eat blah, blah, blah." NONSENSE!! They will eat what you feed them and what you put in the house. It will be interesting to see if the programs can elicit change. I hope so!

So what did you all think of this? I caught the last 30 minutes or so. I thought the doctor/nutritionist/host was utterly devoid of personality and I didn't feel like she really gave them a whole lot of instruction, but the end results seemed positive. I liked the limiting of TV and forcing of activity (I do that with my kids, so it struck a chord). I wonder how accurate those simulated pics are, though? I mean, they looked like mug shots in the first set and a bunch of yuppies in the second! Very strange!

Marie, I thought it was a big DUD. First off, if they were trying to do some sort of reality show, well, they needed to be more interesting. Bratty, obnoxious kids who rule the roost while the parents cower in the corner are a dime a dozen on TV. Second, as an informational program, it was extremely lame! Instead of a coherent discussion of what the nutritionist did to provoke change, we got these blocky segments: here's random footage of James complaining about the tofu. Here's random footage of Robbie stealing muffins. Here's mom getting aromatherapy. WTH? The sushi thing, for example. Why couldn't he have it? Was it because he'd already had some and they were practicing portion control or because there is something inherently wrong with eating sushi if you're on a diet? They didn't explain anything! I would think a parent trying to get some ideas from this show would have difficulty determining what to do beyond "hire a sourpuss nutritionist once a week to stand in the hallway and lecture your kids, using words they don't understand." There's wasn't even an explantion of the exercise!

My advice to them would be to focus on one or two families for a few weeks, so we can get more in depth.

ETA: I'll watch again though, just to see if it improves. :D

I agree with you Sparrow. I was very disappointed. Telling them to eat more fruits and veges, limit TV watching and get more exercise. Hmm... I think even the most uneducated parents would know to do that. I was hoping to maybe learn something new.

I did think the computer aging program was cool. Although, I do think other factors such as stress, smoking, drinking, tanning, etc. can effect how you look as you age.

I may give it one more chance.

Well, hey, I'm glad I elected to watch the Donald and his wannabe Apprentices!

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." Mark Twain ;-)

I also thought the nutritionist was lacking in the personality department. I didn't think she was very supportive or encouraging. For instance, this family has been living on fried foods, salt, sugar, and take-out, so who came up with the great idea to have their first healthy meal be TOFU!! Why couldn't they modify meals or at least foods they're used to eating (ex. chicken of lean beef)
I would think that using familar foods, healthy cooking methods and portion control might get a better reaction than tofu. I do hope the show gets better because people need a reality check on what they're doing to their bodies.

It's a good thing we have Cathe!!!

I did think the morale of the show was, expect the kids to go down kicking and screaming! lol

I agree it was pretty disappointing. The idea is interesting so maybe they'll listen to viewers and change the format somewhat. Imagine, learning something from reality TV rather than be passively entertained! What a concept! :p

I watched the beginnng of it, and thought it was absolutely awful. Everything about it was bad. I couldn't stand to watch those poor kids cry and be ignored. I had to turn it off.

I didn't think that the show was bad, but I think it would be wayyy more effective if they showed ideas for healthy kid-friendly food. Force-feeding the kids plain oatmeal isn't the way to do it. I don't like plain oatmeal either!

Parents can create a healthier lifestyle for their children without them wanting to run away from home!
