If the back of the DVD is blue or fushia or basically any other color than silver, it's definitely a DVD-R. Though some people have said that DVD-R's can also have a silver backing, just like regular DVD's.
Thanks Kathryn because I've always wondered how people could tell. It looks like they would have problems also with the dvd cases not looking the same in some way.
