This is one of my favorite movies. i watched it last night and laughed my butt off. i have seen it at least 100 times, but it never gets old. my abs were hurting i was laughing so hard. the part where the DUDE is leaving the DR.'s office and is somking the "j" in his "car" and drops it in his lap..... i had never noticed that he makes the same noise here as when the marmmet is in the tub...
i watched that scene 9 times in a row and the tears were rolling!
when the car hits the fumpster i just lose it again...
i hope someone else here knows what the heck i am talking about, b/c otherwise i am laughing all alone...which is still fun.

if you haven't seen this movie, i suggest that you do.

p.s. Donna, i am really expecting to hear from you on this one!

i love belly-laughs!

Isn't that a Coen brothers movie? I love ALL of their movies. Those guys are hilarious. Have you seen their newest one yet? Ladykillers w/Tom Hanks? It was one of the funniest movies I'd seen in a long time. Should be out on video by now.

Yes it is the Coen bros and i haven't seen Ladykillers but i will! did they do The Royal Tenenbalms?

The Big Lowboski is my favorite movie. I love John Tuttoro (sp?), and John Goodman did his best work in this movie (IMO). The Cohen brothers always have a great cast in their movies.

Fargo is another favorite - I can't get enough of the Minnesota accent! Oh, and Raising Arizona! Gotta wonder how the Cohen's come up with some of these plots.

Oh those two were awesome too! I don't think they did the Royal Tenenbaums though. Definitely see Ladykillers--IMO it's one of their best yet.

So if you like the Coen bros. you must like Christopher Guest. I have to watch This is Spinal Tap every time it's on--that song Fat Bottomed Girls has me ROTF every time I hear it. Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, Waiting for Guffman--all fabulous & very funny movies.

I liked "The Big Lebowski", but my favorite Coen Bros. movies were "O Brother Where Art Thou" and my alltime fave "Fargo". As a person who has lived in Minnesota for over 20 years and is still not considered quite "one of us", I just howled at how well the Coens and that wonderful band of actors nailed the Minnesota character.

The Coen brothers, interestingly, come from a first-tier suburb of the Minneapolis side of the Twin Cities, St. Louis Park, which for decades was one of the only Twin Cities suburbs that didn't prohibit Jewish people from owning property there. Al Franken, the humorist (or polemicist, depending on your political leanings) and Thomas Friedman, the widely syndicated columnist who writes so well on Middle Eastern political affairs, also come from St. Louis Park.

Go, Ethan and Joel!

I've actually never seen This is Spinal Tap, I think I'm the only person that hasn't, LOL.

I loved Best in Show - Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara are so funny. The preppy couple, Parker Posey and her husband (can't think of his name), and the scene when she's trying to find a replacement for the dog's lost stuffed animal kills me everytime!

I still have to see A Mighty Wind and Waiting for Guffman.

I also love Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (not sure who wrote it).

OMG! I LOVE Dirty Rotten Scoundrels! An underappreciated gem for sure. I recommeneded it to a good friend. She watched the first 10 minutes and 'couldn't get into it' and hated it. It's so well written and acted . . .
As for Joel and Ethan Coen, they are way out of the box. I've never seen Big Lebowski, but I've never not loved everything of theirs I have seen. Ever see their first fim, Blood Simple? Awesome.
Christopher Guest's projects are always great. Waiting for Guffman is my favorite, if I had to pick.
Valerie :)

OMG Annette, O Brother rocked too--that George Clooney line, "this place is two weeks from everywhere!" was hilarious.

Curly Q, see Spinal Tap--if you're my age (late 30s) & listed to heavy metal when you were growing up, you will not be able to stop laughing.

My (then) teenaged son loved The Big Lebowski when it first came out and promptly started calling his dad "Dude" (this is the man who "dream eats" as I confessed on his behalf in Claridge's thread the other day). So when DH heard me laughing as I was reading this thread and I told him you guys were talking about The Big Lebowski he asked me if I'd told you all that I was married to him.
Every time I re-visit any Coen brothers movie I catch more and more that I'd missed before. They really are amazing.

How the heck did you know that this is one of my favorite movies?????!!?? You know my favorite scene is when they cremate Steve Buschemi's character and try to scatter his ashes to the wind and they go all over The Dude. Hilarious!!!!!

My husband and I were just talking about renting this one again. "I'm not Mr. Lewbowski. I'm The Dude, man."

What other movies do you rewind and watch particular scenes over-and-over? There's a scene in The Princess Bride where they storm Prince Humperdink's castle and Inigo takes down the gang of guards within 5 seconds. The fencing choreography is so good, we always have to rewind and watch a couple times.

Christopher Guest is AWESOME! He was "The Six-Fingered Man" in the Princess Bride. Ummmm...Nigel in This is Spinal Tap. And Jamie Lee Curtis' husband (in real life). She's one of my favorite actresses (not really because I think she's the most talented, but because I love her attitude and I have been told many times that I look like her).

Absolutely, positively, rent Spinal Tap. Just listening to the lyrics in their songs is funny enough. The whole scene where they do Stonehenge in concert is one of the funniest things you'll ever see. Harry Shearer (who does a lot of voices on The Simpsons - Ned Flanders), Micheal McKean (aka Leonard Kosnowski from Laverne & Shirley) and Christopher Guest are an amazing comedy team.

Donna, i have been watching Princess Bride over and over since i was a kid....i know EVERY word which annoys the hell out of dh! i know you like it b/c of my fav quote thread......and i had a feeling about you liking this one from reading your posts i have gathered a few "hunches " about your sense of humor....the ashes scene is halarious too and i also love the marmet in the leather harness when the the DUDE is in the tub there is a website that has all the best quotes from this movie...anglefire.com I just love the randomness of the whole movie and the lines. i don't really even like jeff bridges except for this one.

other movies i find particularly funny are ones with Brittish accents...and more importantly Brittish humor.."Bloody Hell" is one of my particular fav. expressions. Alan Rickman has some great scenes in Robin Hood Prince of Theives. i rewind several scenes from "the usual suspects" and Notting Hill b/c of that blonde roomate who walks around in the scuba mask... i am going to have to go rent the Spinal Tap movie..maybe tonday b/c dh is going out of town.

The Usual Suspects is an AWESOME movie! Were you totally surprised at the end? Kevin Spacey is a fantastic actor.

I actually found it ironic that I thought the ashes scene was so funny because the first time I saw the movie was just the day after I returned from my brother's memorial service - he was also cremated. He's sitting on Dad's end table, though. Something that would really not thrill him if he had a say in it. I have in my will that I'm to be scattered on the floor of the Grand Canyon. It will be a good excuse for whoever is still around to go visit there. Everyone should go once in their lifetime.

If you're into British humor - you HAVE to be a Holy Grail fan! I just love John Cleese. Actually all of the Pythons are great. Michael Palin and John Cleese in A Fish Called Wanda were outrageous.

Have you ever seen Starman with Jeff Bridges? It's not really a comedy, but he's really sweet in it.

Yes on the Grail, absolutely on Kevin Spacey (loved American Beauty, Kpax and The Life of David Gale) and no on Starman.

Here's another scene about ashes that i rewind and lmao for....Meet the Parents...hated most of this movie, but the cat pissing on the ashes was one of the funniest things i have ever seen!!!!!!

jes

Yes - that was a good scene in Meet the Parents. I love most of Ben Stiller's stuff (although, I though Zoolander was pretty lame.)

Cable Guy was another under-rated hilarious movie. When the two go to Medieval Times and they're playing the music from the episode of Star Trek where Spock and Kirk are battling on Vulcan, I just about wet my pants!

OK - now I'm REALLY showing my taste in movies. Yes - I'm a trekkie. But I've NEVER gone to a convention!
