QUICK!!!

For STS, can you interchange barbells for the leg exercises that ask for dumbbells? I'm doing my one rep max's right now and I gotta tell you, I couldn't hold a heavy enough dumbbell for the amount of weight I can actually squat, lunge and press. And since I'm doing them right now, does anyone know what SNMs opinion was on this...I just don't have the time to search through that huge forum.....THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP

I do...

But I make the change myself, on my Workout Card. I don't bother trying to adjust it in the 1RM calculator.

I find the very heavy dumbbells strain my forearms after a while, so I use a barbell with the total weight of the two dumbbells. I also wear a 10-pound weight vest and subtract 5 lbs from each dumbbell weight or 10 lbs from the total barbell weight.

Every little bit helps!

Thanks

While I waited for a response, I browsed the STS forum and found that one threat recommended the wrist wrap, but I think I'm going to do like you say and just make notes on my workout cards how I modify the weights; using a vest and/or barbell. Also, I intend to do the 6 month rotation to work out the bugs for a more effective 2nd go 'round.

Thank you for responding.

I would sure like some more opinions from those who are doing STS whether they've substituted barbells for dumbbells for legs and if there were any issues doing that. I can't imagine there would be since any weight is resistance regardless of what that weight is.

Hi

I use my barbell regularly for squats and some deadlifts when doing legs. I only have one set of adjustable dumbells so it is easier to have the barbell ready and lower weights on the adjustable dumbells. I could not hold two forty lb dumbells very well so barbell it is!

It works out fine and does not alter you 1rm as you can just use the totals.
Good luck

I'm doing the 6 month rotation and use my barbell for a LOT of the leg work. Squats, static lunges, deadlifts. All done with my barbell. I have dumbbells up to 40, but that still wasn't heavy enough for me for legs. I have had NO problem and LOVE the barbell much better because I'm able to go as heavy as I need to without being limited by my dumbbells.

Good luck!

Great! Thanks!

I'm writing down the amount of weight I use (dumbbell or barbell) in the 1RM Calulator then on my workout card I'm writing down "vest" and "barbell" so I know what to use.

I know! I was so excited, I printed out ALL the workout cards and hadn't even done the 1RM calculations! What a waste of paper.

I appreciate all your opinions.

I make all kinds of changes - and write everything down. Some of those Legs entries are pretty funny: vest, ankle wrap on wrist, gloves, and selecttech split setting!

What works for me is to go through each workout beforehand, and make notes as to what equipment to use, and adjust the weights up/down based on the previous exercise. I also adjust my 1RMs as my strength improves. I did all of my tests initially but I find that different muscles make improvements at different rates, or get tired out more rapidly in sequence than when I did them individually, so changes are needed to stay challenged and complete the exercises in good form. Not sure if this is "right" but since the results are far better than I'd ever hoped for, I'm happy :D
