quick question-

To all the very knowledgable mommies- is it Ok to drink caffeine free Diet Coke during pregnancy? I didn't with the frist two but recently read something that said nutra sweet was Ok in moderation. Anyone have any input?

Thanks-
Jean

I drank Diet Coke and Diet Rite while I was pregnant. According to the research I did, aspertame and sucrulose (Splenda) are generally considered safe for pregnancy, while saccharine (Sweet'n'Low) is questionable.

I know that the safety of artificial sweeteners has been debated, and not everyone would agree that it's 100% safe to consume aspartame, so you have to do what you're most comfortable with. I limited my consumption to one or two drinks a week.

My obstetricians recommended that pregnant women do not consume artificial sweeteners, so I didn't. I just wasn't comfortable consuming something that was questionable.

But, I know many women who did and their babies turned out just fine!

It was also recommended that I didn't have any artificial sweeteners as well. However, I think nutrasweet and sucralose are fine for the most part as long as you are comfortable with them. My only fear about some of the diet drinks is that they have Acesulfame Potassium in them - and I read in "What to Expect when You're Expecting" that this wasn't a particular good thing to consume.

Thanks for all the replies! I really appreciate them! I think just one or two per week will be just fine- I get bored drinking mostly water and could use a different taste when eating all those tacos I can't seem to get enough of!!
