Does anyone know the difference between an Jalepeno pepper (sp?) and a Grenn Chilie?
I have to make something for DD to bring to school for international day and I decided to make Mexican Macoroni and Cheese. But it calls for chilies and the grocery store didn't have any so I bought Jalepeno's instread
The recipe calls for 3 chilies but I bought 2 Jalepenos.Do you know if one is spicer then the other? Would 2 Jalepeons be as spicy as 3 chilies?

Thanks so much,
Lori:)

Hi Lori!

I'm not an expert on chili's (they give me heartburn so I don't eat them), but I believe the green one is the milder of the two. Just be sure to remove the seeds which is where most of the heat comes from.

SO do you think that 2 Jalepenos are equivalent to 3 Med chilies?

The reason I am in a rush is b/c I am in the middle of making it! LOL
Lori:)

Lori, I have no clue, really. Because this is for kids, I'd just put in a little bit and not worry too much about whether or not you followed the recipe exactly. Ad lib! lol!

Oh my Heavens - Jalepenos are quite hot compared to chiles!!!!! Chiles are very mild - I almost think I'd run back and get the chiles or find another way to spice it up and make it Mexican. Be sure to taste it first! Good luck!

I've only found green chilis in a can in the 'mexican/international' section of my supermarket. I've never seen them in the produce section (of course my local supermarket is lacking in a lot of ways!). Did you look in the canned foods aisle? Green chilis are a whole lot milder than japalenos. JMHO, but if you use both those japalenos in your recipe it might be too hot for the kids to eat.

Echo what TK said - you get green chilies in a can in the Mexican Isle at the store. Living in California I can sometimes get them fresh here, but the ones in the cans are already roasted and taste better. And yes, Jalepanos are very hot compared to green chilies. :) Good luck! Sounds like a good dish!
