Questions about clean eating

SRP

Cathlete
Hi all - I understand the philosophy of clean eating - foods as close to their natural state as possible. I have a few questions though:

What about:
-- spaghetti sauce (homemade without additives and very low salt)
-- whole wheat pasta
-- peanut butter (preferrably natural, but I haven't quite made the switch)
-- bread (whole wheat or whole grain)
-- cheese

What is the best way to prepare foods - do you cook normally, but with reduced fat, or do you try to eat lots of raw veggies and such?

Are there foods that you used to consider relatively healthy that are considered no-no's under this plan?

Thanks!

I've been a fan since I tried her 30 day THM (Total Health Makeover)...No, I don't work for her! Just have adapted most of her principles...I DO still eat beef, chicken and fish (not shellfish), but have cut out dairy and pork...It's amazing when you combine the right foods how much better you feel!

She's got a cookbook out, though I haven't gotten it yet.

Become a member of your local co-op. You'll find EVERYTHING you need there!

Try the THM, you'll rarely add salt to anything again...Once your tastebuds are "back to normal" (and for most people, it'll be the first time in your life), you'll love flavors you never have before!

MJ,

I looked up the website tht u recommended. My concern is tht she asks u to eliminate daity completely from ur diet. Is tht necessary? Im just a little confused, coz many eveidence suggests that dairy is actullay good for u. Would u pls give me a little insight into this?
neha.

This is the way I think of it...

Humans are the only animal that consume the milk (or milk products) of another mammal on a regular basis...Would you give a calf human milk?? Our bodies are made (internally) to be sustained on a vegetarian diet...Now, I'm not saying that I'M a vegetarian, and I'm not a member of PETA, but I know my body is much more functional when I eat easy to digest protein (plant) than when I eat a flesh protein...

It's an interesting thing to get used to...I still eat ice cream, cheese and that type of thing...The difference is that it's made from soy...You can find a whole array of products out there...

After I made the switch, I thought I'd try a piece of "real cheese" on a sandwich...UGH!! I had stomach cramps for the entire next day!! Maybe it had nothing to do with it?? Then again, I don't want to take that chance!

In good health!

I just heard something interesting regarding milk (I don't do dairy because I'm vegan, so it didn't make ME sick to my stomach!): the United States allows for the highest level of PUS in milk of any country. And there's quite a bit of pus in the US milk system because of the wide-spread instances of mastitis (which cows get because they've been bred to produce huge amounts of milk).

Yummy, huh?

Yes, Kathryn's right! They give cows the hormon rBST, which makes them produce more milk, but gives them this disease. It's horrible! That's why they have to then add antiobiotics to milk, because of this pus! I drink milk regularly, but I specifically look for milk without this hormone.

Yeah...no pus for us! (We should make T-shirts!)}(

You guys are going to freak out the Moms whose children drink milk, LOL!

As far as cramping after eating dairy...it's probably lactose intolerance which comes with age or a sabattical from dairy. At least that's when mine started.

I saw a tee shirt the other day that said: "got pus? milk does." I loved it!!!
Another vegan here and I'm so glad I don't indulge in dairy anymore. I thought it would be so difficult for me and because of that, I ended up being a vegetarian for 13 years before I could do it. Now, I can't believe I waited so long!! The transition was fairly painless. At first I missed pizza more than anything but after awhile I forgot about it. I occasionally eat soy cheese but I find that I don't really crave that "cheesy" texture anymore.

Okay, gals - I really, really love cheese, milk, ice cream, sour cream... you name it. If it's in the dairy family, I'll probably eat it.

I'm going to try my very best to forget all these pus references.

Don't worry - I'm not taking offense at anything. But I've tried to go cheeseless in the past and was not a happy person.

I think we should freak out the moms who give their kids milk. Milk is intended for babies and cow milk is intended for baby cows. Just because it has become so imbedded in our American lifestyle does not mean that it is good for you. There are tons of alternatives to milk (as far a nutrition goes) to give children.

LOL!

I'm glad my daughter's grown and my granddaughter is not a milk drinker. You guys are grossing me out, LOL!

Well, if pus is in ice cream, so be it!

I have 3 kids that are under 6. NOne of them drink or really eat dairy, except the occasional slice of pizza. They are healthier and in better shape than a lot of their milk drinker friends, Just my observartion.

I'd agree with that...It's funny actually, my daughter will actually take the cheese OFF of pizza when she's at birthday parties and such!

It's amazing what some people think, though...She gets a carton of soy milk in her lunch bag for school, and her teacher called and asked me about it...Amazing...I would think that "non" milk drinkers would be more the "normal" these days? For goodness sakes, we aren't hippies!!

MJ -
thanks for this site. I finally had a chance to take a look, and it is interesting. Gives me something to think about.

Ok, I'm so grossed out by the puss thing! Ew!!! Now I have to go get Soy milk for myself. It's a good thing that i like it. I'm not a VEgan, or vegetarian, but I don't try to make it a practice to drink puss. EW!
