I have about 15 lbs of flab to lose, but I cant do high impact nor can I do standing leg work b/c of a knee injury. Since I cant do much cardio, has anyone had success with eating pretty low cal and concentrating more on strength work instead?? I would assume that since I'm doing less cardio I wouldnt get as hungry.

Thanks.

Is that all it takes to get less hungry?? LOL

Bump (for someone who has an answer for you).

I am in the same situtation (well, I have a sprained ankle) and would love to know the answer to this! --Thea

If you really want to lose weight and can't do cardio, eat clean. I wouldn't neccesarily do a low cal diet since all they do is make you hungry, and once you start eating normal again you tend to gain more than you took off. If I were you, I would cut out sugar, pop, salt, fatty meats, etc. and load up on veggies, whole wheat products, fruit, lean meats and plenty of water. I have gotten terrific results when I eat this way. I injured my foot a few years ago and couldn't do anything, but I ate very clean and looked as tone as I did when I was working out and actually lost fat. OH, and I was NEVER hungry. You get hungry because your body needs food and nutrients, so don't ignore that symptom! Just make sure you treat your bod with what it needs.

Lifting weights will boost your metabolism, and is part of the equation that equals fatloss. (BTW, I actually find that when I lift weights my appetite does increase as well as when I do cardio. Just make sure that you are eating well.) I haven't ever done a rotation that did not include cardio, and the only people I know who do it are men, but they are completely different from us, and some of the female personal trainers, but they are kind of butch and definately not sending the same message that I want to, so if I did stregth, it would be a low weight high rep workout.

There are those that are far wiser than I who hopefully will post as well, especially about the strength training! :)

Can you do kickboxing? It is usually low impact (Cathe's are somewhat of an exception, but KPC can definitely be modified to be all low-impact), but it's high intensity and a great calorie burner (up there with step and running, according to a recent chart I saw in some magazine).

As Missy said, it's "clean" eating that is important. Make your calories count and provide your body with real food, which will make it easier to find a healthy weight.

You're right that often when you exercise less, you don't get as hungry, but I find that it applies more to heavy lifting and a bit less so to tough interval workouts (which burn a lot of calories when you do them) than to regular steady-state cardio.

Are you seeing a PT for your knee injury? Be sure to get some exercises that you can do that will strengthen the area.

I think cardio is important for overall general health. What about swimming or one of those ellipticle (sp?) training devices. No impact but cardio. If it's hard to include these on a frequent basis what about 2x a week? And, otherwise do the weight work. I agree with Missy on the low weight high rep thing because I tend to bulk, but everyone is different. I would not do the low cal thing because you will lose muscle and be in worse shape afterward (although thinner temporarily). Your body will do the starvation thing, dumping muscle and hanging onto fat. Not a desirable outcome.

Can't you cycle? I work with a physical therapist that swears cycling is the best thing in the world for those that can't do high impact stuff--IF you adjust the seat correctly.
