Question re body fat in Oxygen article

Hey everyone,

Today I've been reading the July issue of Oxygen magazine, and one of the articles has a workout where the author lost nine pounds in two months. If you look on page 104, they show her before and after measurements and stats.

She's in wonderful shape and looks fantastic, but does she really look like she's at only 9.7% body fat?

It seems like she would be higher than that, but she did get hydrostatically tested (dunked in water, which is supposedly the most accurate way to test). I always thought that to have a body fat measurement that low, you had to be really ripped and muscular.

Hmm . . . .

:)

I need to check that out. I know at that low level, you would be very depleted, you would be extremely vascular as well. Alot of the fitness competitors compete at around 5-9 percent bodyfat, 5 being the extreme, not everyone can get that low. But now I am curious to see what this woman looks like.

Yes, it did seem strange that the article said she was that low. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who wondered about it!:)

Leanne I was questioning that myself when I flipped through this AM.

Didn't seem to match up to some of the stats I have seen from competitors who really are at 8 - 10%.

I wonder if it's a mistake . . . .

Leanne,

Your post sent me scrambling for my issue of Oxygen. I had to see this! I am with everyone else. She looks good, but there is no way she is at 9.7%. If she is I might as well give up now, because if at 9.7% you do not look like the ladies in the competition photos, what does it take to get there? She isn't even lifting heavy in her workout for great muscle gain.

BTW, I am currently at 15% hoping to get to 13%.

Thanks, Linda, for chiming in! I had been thinking the same thing -- that if she's at 9.7%, then the women in the competitions must be REALLY low!

You look absolutely fabulous, by the way! How great that you're at 15%!

Can I ask what you use to determine your body fat? I have a Tanita scale, an Omron hand-held device, and regular calipers -- and I get different readings from all three so I have no idea which one to believe!:) My BF is going down each week, though, which is the important thing! ;-)

Leanne,

I have the accu-measure body fat calipers. But I also recently went to a health fair and they had one of those serious body fat scales there and it confirmed the same 15%.

Thanks, Linda! I think I need to learn how to use my calipers better. I found a video on Bodybuilding.com yesterday that gives pointers, but haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

How great that you're doing so well!!:)
