Question on New Software

Cathlete
Hi

Very excited about this! However, I do have a question. Is this software that will take DVD's we already own of Cathe's and allow us to break parts out and download them or do we have to purchase clips and chapters on the software site?

Will we be able to burn to DVD what we create as well?

TIA!

I would also like to know the answer to this. I have every Cathe workout on DVD and would certainly pay for the software but would have a hard time justifying to my husband repurchasing clips I already own! By the way I think the new Workout Blender is an AWESOME idea!! Kudos! :)

I too would really like to be able to use the DVD's I already own with the software. I could not justify repurchasing all these things in the right format when really it should be just a matter of converting the DVD into the right format right? There are lots of DVD to MP4 converters on the market. Please consider making these converted files compatible with the software even if we have to purchase another 3rd party program to do the conversion. It would be so worth it!

Also would love to be able to burn my custom premixes to a DVD.

DVD’s are encoded with mpeg 2 and will not work on an Ipod or Apple TV. You can easily convert mpeg 2 files into mpeg 4 files if you are technically minded, but unless you use the right software and have a thorough understanding of encoding you will have problems with motion and will not be happy with the result.

We have not designed the workout blender to burn DVDs and the software will not contain burner software. The workout blender is designed for people who want to use digital downloads on Ipods and products like Apple TV.

I realize many people will not want to repurchase older titles that they already have on DVD, but the same argument was made several years ago from VHS users who did not want to repurchase titles on DVD. FYI -We do plan on offering a sale on our current titles when the product is first released.

Like or not, eventually DVDs will no longer be made by anyone. Many people, including us believe that digital downloads are the future. How long DVDs will continue to be sold will depend on how much longer customers continue to buy them. Technology is changing very fast in this area nowadays and nobody knows for sure, but many experts believe that DVDs have less than 5 years.

Also, please remember the workout blender is part of a much bigger program we’re releasing. Over the next several months we will disclose more information including video tutorials that will help you understand exactly everything this patent pending product and technology does. So please be patient and wait to see all the information before making a decision.

Thanks for the update! I've got my ipod ready and looking forward to the possibilities!!

This is a very cool step!! Thanks again!

Quick clarification - will the DVDs be on sale, or the MP-4 files?

Just the MP4 files will be on sale. This will only be in the begining to help those who already have the DVDs.

Regarding the MP4 sale...
Will the 4-Day Split 2-disk set be available for MP4 presale, also?
I am thinking that I may want to make the change over to MP4
on this new series. Currently, I have placed my Pre-sale order, but may cancel it and order the MP4 instead, since I will be transitioning to the MP4 format in the very near future anyway.

thank you!
Linda

We really haven't got that far with our planning. We first need to finish all of our work on this project and then beta test for several months.

Thank you for the quick reply!
:D

If you would like any help with beta testing the software, from a real user, I would love to help. I can find bugs anywhere...

Thanks again,
linda

Since your company is the one that produced the DVD's, shouldn't you be able to put the code in the software to decode the DVD's so that we can download the into the software?
Thanks

All DVDs are encoded in mpeg 2 regardless of the company. This has nothing to do with us, but was decided upon and set by the DVD International consortium many years ago. All Ipods use mp4 video. Again this was not done by us, but by the inventor of the product – Apple Computers.

Several people have asked us about being able to copy files from a DVD so they would not have to purchase digital files. There are several reasons why we have not included this feature.

#1. It is illegal to copy files from a DVD for the purpose of creating a new product. You can only make an exact backup copy for yourself of the original product. Taking segments from different DVDs to create a new product is a violation of federal copyright laws. Since we will eventually use and market the blender for more than just our DVDs, we can not legally include such a feature without risking a major lawsuit.

#2 We’re going to license our digital files instead of selling them. You will be able to use them on any of your personal computers in your household, but you will not be allowed to sell them. This is necessary to stop the illegal selling of our products on sites like ebay which have reached astronomical proportions.

#3 Our files are encoded with a lot of metadata. The metadata is very important as it will be used by the blender for sorting ,organizing clips and tabulating data. Copying files from a DVD would not have metadata and would have to be added by the user. This would be very confusing and time consuming for the novice.

#4 Though there are plenty of rippers and converters that can turn a DVD VOB file into an MP4 file, few do it well enough to be used in a program like ours that must decode and then re-encode every file. We spent over 6 months testing and perfecting our encodes to get the highest quality possible. Without knowing exactly how to encode a file for an Ipod you will have motion problems with your encodes. We also take most of our encodes from the source tape, not a DVD which means our encodes are simply better than what you could make from just a DVD.

#5 Lastly, we’re not selling the workout blender for a lot of money. We want to keep the price as low as possible. With each blender we sell we have to pay a license fee to the MP4 codec company that we use in the software and this is not cheap. The way we make money and can afford to pay our staff and programmers is by selling the digital video clips. This product has taken over two years to develop and has been by far the largest capital expenditure in our company’s history. We realize that in the beginning many consumers will not want to purchase clips of DVDs they already own. This is why we plan on discounting for a limited time many of the clips. The older the clip the more the discount will be. We had similar problems going from VHS to DVD and I’m sure we will go through the same period of adjustment with our new products.

Just for clarification is each video clip going to be a chapter from the specific DVD. So you will be downloading one chapter at a time

You always will be able to download individual chapter points from any DVD as well as the full length workout. You will also be able to download groups of clips that are combined in some cases; i.e., the entire chest clips or back clips.

Will some workouts be re-chaptered for this: like the earlier DVD's, which were not chaptered in detail, and some (like some HC series) where the chapter points fall right on the beginning of an exercise, thus 'too late' to be very useful in a premix?

I think you will be quite pleased with the chaptering of the digital downloads. Just about every title and every chapter point is or has been tweaked to make sure you have enough time to grab your equipment or prepare for the next segment. There will be some segments where this is not true simply because there isn’t a good break point between the segments, but these are rare. We’re also adding chapter points to our older titles bringing them up to speed with how we chapter a workout nowadays. We’re even going to release workouts like Mega Step Blast and Step Motion 1 that are not available on DVD.

The software also allows you to add your own info cards between segments if you prefer to. You will be able to add transition info cards of various lengths between any two segments; i.e., "Get your 40 lb Barbell Ready for Curls". This will further help to make sure you have adequate time between segments and will let you know exactly what equipment is needed. I should also point out that when you make a premix the Workout Blender will always list all of the equipment you will need.

Great news on the chaptering.

I wasn't that tempted by this new technology, but this definitely tempts me more!

Will Step 'n Motion 3 (my first Cathe workout!) also be available?

Ok, I'm technologically challenged and don't have a teenaged child to explain it to me....so to use these digital downloads, do you need a special IPOD? Is is similar to how music is downloaded from napster onto your MP3 player or IPOD?

Yes it is similar, but don't worry we will have very detailed and easy to understand video tutorials that will walk you through everything. :)

Thanks for the clarifications. Sounds awesome. You guys are great!!!! I'm gonna love the video cards. I'm gonna have to invest in an apple TV. Looks like I'm gonna have to hunt out my DVD cases in the attic so I can re-sell my DVD's on ebay. Just like I did when you went from VHS to DVD. I currently keep all of my Cathe DVD's in a seperate DVD case. I certainly cuts down on space. I'm anxiously awaiting release of the product.
