question on ab exercise

hi everyone
my bf was looking on the internet yesterday for exercises to do to get rid of his "love handles". One site he found said do abs, twist abs and anchoring exercises but I cannot find anything on anchoring exercises - does anyone know what these are?

I'm pretty sure it's anchoring your feet under a stable object or having someone hold your feet while you're doing them. That's the only thing I can think of.

You know how when you do your abs on a decline bench and your feet are anchored underneath the roll at the bottom? I may be totally wrong.
 
I always thought doing crunches, etc. with feet anchored called the hip flexors more into play, but maybe it also works the transverse abs more?
 
I always thought ancoring was like on an incline bench. I used to do them on the incline bench with my feet holding and did twisting crunches.
