Question from one of the obsessed

Hi ladies -
I just want to know one thing - how on earth do you all fit in such awesome workouts every day?

I know some of you don't work away from the home, and that would help quite a bit. But what about those of you who do work out of the home?

My personal situation is: up at 4:30, get ready for work an walk the dog. Hit the road at 5:40, to be at work at 7 a.m. Get off at 3:30 and am home by 4:30, if there are no traffic hangups. Feed the horses. Hurry back home and cram in an hour, maybe an hour and 20 min, workout. Fix dinner, clean up, crash.

I just love to see all these incredible, long workouts! I can do that on weekends, but I'm really at my max during the week. Drat.

I don't know that those incredibly long workouts are really beneficial. JMHO. There's got to be a point where you're doing the body more harm than good.

Please don't slam yourself...you're doing fantastic with the schedule you have :)

I don't work out of the home but my situation changed drastically when I became self-employed in 1990. Instead of having to be at work at 8, I normally started anywhere from 9:30 to 10:30. I do work late sometimes but now I can fit my long workouts in during the morning before work. And on days when I go in later, I can actually clean my house...http://www.coolsmilies.net/happy/dance2.gif[/img]...Carole

I'm actually a SAHW...Stay At Home Writer, and am lucky enough to make my own schedule. When I did work outside the home I did not do as much, basically just an hour a day. Now I do longer not to push myself beyond what is rational but because I can take my time and get into it. Plus I know I won't always have it so cushy!!

Frankly I don't know how some of these people do it either. I get up at 400am so I can get in a max of 75 minutes ( and that is not every day ), get my kids up and ready for school, work from 8-5pm, come home, do housework, etc....collapse by 900pm. I don't have that much time to devote to some of the workouts presented in the rotations, so I modify and live in peace!:)

You do what you can, and the heck with the rest!

I'm a SAHM so that makes it much easier for me to do longer work outs but I still try to keep it to 1 hr 30 mins max. Today I tried something new so it took 1 hr 45 mins but that I would not do more than MAYBE one time per week. My average work out is an hour to an hour and a half so it's not much different from yours really.

When I worked outside of the home I stuck to an hour or less because it's all I had time for...

Like Candi said...don't be too hard on yourself! Exercising regularly in itself is something to be quite proud of no matter how long your sessions are...and an hour and 20 is NOT shabby AT ALL! :)

I have to second Candi on this one! An hour or an hour and 20 minutes is a VERY respectable workout, especially with your schedule! Where else woudl you fit more? When I do much more than that on a regular basis, in addition to my regular work & life schedule, I burn out. There is only so much that one person can do!

If you're taking the dog for a walk in the morning, let him/her do they're "thing", then pump it up a notch for 5 -10 minutes...And you're throwing hay bales, scrubbing water tanks for the horses (I used to have one myself, they can be HARD work!)...I think that's awsome! And you STILL have time to fit in an hour or more workout after an 8 hour day, and your commute?? SUPERWOMAN!!

I'm up at 4:15 on school mornings, working out by 4:30, done by 5:30, in the shower and done with all that hopefully by 6:15. Nik (my 14 year old daughter who is now in high school!!) gets herself up at 6:00. I have about 20 minutes online in the AM, then we eat breakfast and are out the door at 7:00. I try to fit in three evening (and shorter) workouts a week. On weekends I do my workouts in the morning or I never will, but I'm not up at 4:15!! LOL!! It's a challenge, but it's important to me so I do just do it.

I am more fortunate now that I am a SAHM so I have a bit more time. When I worked full time I never got more than 90 min tops for a session in the gym - either too tired or not enough time. Now I am able to workout when my son (16.5 months) naps so I can take my time. Usually my workouts take around 2 hrs but remember that is often 2 different tapes, usually a cardio of some sort & weight of some sort w/ breaks for water/bathroom/if my son is up. Some days I have extra long ones when I'm energetic but I only really workout 3 days a week. Believe me, all of the workouts I have seen on this forum are WAY acceptable and awesome, in my humble opinion!

I agree.

Working out 45 minutes to an hour can be just as effective as a longer workout in many cases. I think choice of workouts and intensity are more important than how long you workout. Doing 1 Cathe workout a day is plenty, if you give it your all.

If you do want to do an occasional longer workout, pick a day of the weekend for either a longer workout, or (better, IMO) two workouts: cardio in the morning, and weights in the afternoon. That can give your body a boost for a few days.

MJ - my horses aren't all that demanding - we have lots of pasture and two ponds, so hay is only needed in the winter, during bad weather. They pretty much take care of themselves! Some days, I just zip down there, make sure they're all in one piece, give them a pat and a little grain, and leave. Not much of a workout there! Superwoman? Hardly! :)

You know exercising for an hour is the norm. You are already in the zone of "long workouts".

There's no competition here to see who can work out the longest. I hate that mentality. It's not healthy. Set your own goals within the time you have available. Then, as Kathryn said, use the weekends for real challenges if you want.

As Candi says, longer workouts do not necessarily lead to improved fitness, but regularity and frequency of workouts do.

Well put, Clare. Seems to me the emphasis should be on quality of workout not duration. It is more than possible to get a better workout in 45 minutes than what someone else does in 90 minutes. Some individuals seem to focus too much on how long/how many times per day they work out. To each his own but I do think it is important to be realistic with the time you have available.

Thanks, everyone, for your views. Don't worry - I'm not so obsessed that I feel I have to compete with everyone. My "problem" is, I'm trying to get rid of stubborn cellulite, and I think I've plateaued. I'd like to see what would happen if I could give it just a bit more effort. I'm not overweight and am in pretty good shape. If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen, and I won't obsess about that!

Also, I'm just envious of those of you who do have the extra time, if you want to take it.
