Question for those that do yoga

I have been doing yoga for the past few years but nothing regular. I have now decided I want to incorporate yoga into my routine at least once a week. I was just wondering do you do yoga on your "rest" day or do you schedule yoga in as a workout day and still have a rest day.

TIA Kim:)

If it's power yoga, I consider that a workout. If it's more gentle yoga or stretching-focused, I do that on what would be my rest day.

I do it on my rest days and sometimes on Sunday's after my workout since I have more time on the week ends. I keep saying I'm going to do a hard practice and count it as a workout day....but up until now, that hasn't happened. I also fit in easier yoga practices at night before bed when I have time.

I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said. If I do vinyasa or power yoga I consider that a workout in itself. If I do more a more gentle practice--one in which I don't feel like i am really "working out" but more stretching--than I do that on an rest day or as an add-on at the end of my 'regular' workout.

I just thought I'd chime in. I agree with all the posts. I try to do some "easier" yoga after every workout--especially a run when my back is all compacted and my hamstrings are extra tight. But I consider my longer, intermediate practices as a regular workout. If I have time on a cardio day I'll piggyback a harder practice; but my muscles are just too fried on a weight day. I don't usually have time on my "rest" day for either version.

Hi,

I'll chime in too, supporting the fact that different things work for different people. I've been doing power yoga daily for the past 3 months, in addition to my regular daily workouts. I have seen amazing changes in my body, that I've seen with nothing else. It is time consuming, but it will always be a part of my exercise routine. It is really effective after an upper or lower body weight workout to fatigue the muscles just a little more. My core is the best it's ever been, and I don't do any core exercises except the yoga and the pilates zip and hollow.

Hi Tracy,

Do you use videos to do your yoga? I'm just curious what videos you use. I'm always on the lookout for a good yoga video to add.

Thanks!

Hi,

I do use vidoes to do my yoga and I use B.Kest, Eion F., and Shiva Rae. For about 2 months, I did Magically Hips every other day because I herniated a disc in my back. (That is really how I got started on this consistency with yoga.) Springing from a seated position to a plank is great for the core. On days that I do an upper body workout, I like to do B.Kest Sweat because it focuses a lot on controlled movements. I think that Shiva's Fluid Power has given me the most insight into engaging my core while doing yoga, plus those routines really require you to engage the core. Overall, for me, she is the best. I am always the most open and flexible after doing some of her sequences. She's very yogaish and not for everyone. After doing so much yoga, I really believe that you have to do quite a bit of yoga to really reap the FULL benefits of improved tone and flexibility. It is easy to go through the motions of yoga, but it takes time to get to a point where you can really work a pose to your edge. Any yoga or even stretching, is still better than none.

Thanks for responding, Tracy! I have Yoga Shakti by Shiva Rea and I go through phases of using it a lot and only using it a little. I think you've inspired me to really put more effort into my yoga practice!:)

Thanks again!

My fave's that I come back to time and time again - have a huge yoga collection

Shiva Rea - Fluid Power & Yoga Shakti
Eion Finn's - Power Yoga for Happiness, Pure and Simple Yoga (eion's site is Vancouveryoga.com and he also sells on AMazon)
Rainbeau Mars - Yoga for Beauty - Dusk & Dawn Series -- not real strenuous but not real easy either...good balance of work and stretch...feel good workouts
Altar of the Heart with Tilak Pyle - availabe at Fitness Organica or thru Tilak's website

I also like Bryan Kest, Xlfowsion, and various other practices...but the above are the ones I do over and over.

I also really like Power Yoga for Athletes with Kim Fowler but I like the practice ....not really the instructor. It's amazing for Catheites. gets into all of those spots. YAS.com

Hi Lora,

I have Tilak Pyle because everyone on video fitness said it was wonderful. I've only done it once, and wasn't thrilled. He didn't seem to hold the poses very long. Maybe I should try again? How does Pure and Simple Yoga compare with Y4h?

Thanks,

Tracy

i wish netflix would carry some of these things to try, they are rather pricey for some of them, and different strokes for different folks.

and while i am not the one of complain,i went to tilak's site, and really i can do without bare-a$$ed yoga poses LOL.
