Question for runners....?

I've just started training for a half marathon this summer and ran 30 minutes yesterday and it felt great!!! I've been reading my Runner's World magazine and getting lots of great tips. But, I was wondering if any of you eat a energy/protein bar before you run? If so, how much before you run? 30 minutes - an hour? And, any other tips that have worked for you that I could try?

I ran a half marathon two years ago and it was one of the best experiences of my life and I can't wait to get back to running 7-8 miles those were some great quiet moments that I really loved and miss.

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Marcia...I think its great you are training for a half again....:)...I have had so many good experiences running races! Runner's World is a great magazine. For me normally, before any workout I eat a half a protein bar Genisoy usually. Now I might have something more if I am running 8 miles or more (like the whole bar). I run alot of distance so for 15 miles or more I eat Oatmeal with soy protein powder, walnuts and a banana. I'll eat usually 30 to 60 min before I run...:)...good luck!!!....Carole

I'm going to be training for a half marathon too. It's this October. :) I'm also running in an 8K in two weeks! I'm new to this too and really like it. I'm up to 5 miles now and feel great!!!!

Thanks for the tips Carole! I'm going to get that magazine!

:D

Dani...that is cool. I did see your thread about it. I didn't reply as you got most of the advice I would have said! Runner's World has a site also. www.runnersworld.com great info and even for beginners plus training schedules....:)...Carole

Marcia/Carole/Dani -

You might find this interesting. I picked this book up at Border's last night and it looks amazing (plus there are pictures and he is VERY easy on the eyes!). I read the first chapter and can't wait to read more. It's called "The Ultramarathon Man". Here's a description from Amazon.com:

Product Description:
There are those of us whose idea of the ultimate physical challenge is the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon. And then there is Dean Karnazes. Karnazes has run 226.2 miles nonstop; he has completed the 135-mile Badwater Ultramara-thon across Death Valley National Park-considered the world's toughest footrace-in 130-degree weather; and he is the only person to complete a marathon to the South Pole in running shoes (and probably the only person to eat an entire pizza and a whole cheesecake while running).

Karnazes is an ultramarathoner: a member of a small, elite, hard-core group of extreme athletes who race 50 miles, 100 miles, and longer. They can run forty-eight hours and more without sleep, barely pausing for food or water or even to use the bathroom. They can scale mountains, in brutally hot or cold weather, pushing their bodies, minds, and spirits well past what seems humanly possible.

Ultramarathon Man is Dean Karnazes's story: the mind-boggling adventures of his nonstop treks through the hell of Death Valley, the incomprehensible frigidity of the South Pole, and the breathtaking beauty of the mountains and canyons of the Sierra Nevada. Karnazes captures the euphoria and out-of-body highs of these adventures.

With an insight and candor rarely seen in sports memoirs, he also reveals how he merges the solitary, manic, self-absorbed life of hard-core ultrarunning with a full-time job, a wife, and two children, and how running has made him who he is today: a man with an überjock's body, a teenager's energy, and a champion's wisdom.

Thanks finsgirl! Great Article. I have only dabbled a bit in ultras. I have done 2 50K's (31 miles) but I find the people that do 50 and 100 miles to be amazing. I ran with a couple of them last weekend....I am hoping it isn't contagious as 50K's seem enough for me. Although I do remember saying I'd never do a marathon!!!...:)...Carole
