Question for morning exercisers

Hello. I have a question for those of you who exercise in the morning. I recently (on Tuesday) started exercising early (get up at 4:45 and start by 5:15) instead of my usual afternoon time. I've noticed that with the change I'm more short of breath during the workouts. (I even had to pause longer than I normally would between sets when doing legs this morning.) Did anyone else have this experience when swithcing to morning workouts? If so, how long did it take you to adjust? I assume my body just has to get used to getting up earlier (I was getting up at 6:45) and exercising earlier, but I guess I'm looking for some reassurance. I feel like I lost about 6 months worth of conditioning! Thanks in advance for your input.

Deborah ~

I am an early morning exerciser and I have always been an early morning exerciser....

BUT...I'm thinking it is a condintioning thing, because when I "try" to workout in the afternoons after work....well, I just can't do it. I get stomach cramps and my breathing is just off. I HAVE to work out in the morning on an empty stomach...

It is hard to change your natural rhythm....BUT, it can be done. Hang in there....

Funny - due to my work schedule and not "getting around to it" in the afternoons/evenings, I too started working out in the AM during the workweek. (I typically do my weekend workouts in the AM usually between 7 and 9).

While working out between 5:30 and 6:00 during the week I feel like I have less stamina and energy. Of course I haven't eaten and don't have the time in order to keep my early workout schedule. I wonder if even drinking a protein drink beforehand will help.

What do others of you have to add? :7

Hi,
I don't remember being out of breath when I started exercising in the a.m. I get up at 4:30a.m., and exercise for one hour. Just stick with it because it will be so worth it when you get home from work and realize that you already worked out...you can actually do things you want to do (not like we don't like to workout). You know what I mean.

I am and have been a morning exerciser for years. HOWEVER, there are some days I just can't drag myself out of bed, so I exercise when I get home from work (around 4) Unlike other posters, I notice that I feel better in the afternoon. Someone posted not too long ago that the body is at its best between 4-5 pm. But my preference is still in the am--no distractions and it gets done:D

I notice that in swimming there is a difference in my times when I swim early morning, compared to a noon swim. I think my muscles and my mind are just not awake enough to do speed work.

Hi:

I travel alot for my job, so because of my erratic hours I sometimes have to exercise REALLY early in the AM before a flight out.

I do so much better if I eat something a little something before... I am not even remotely hungry at that time, so its usually just a banana, or a handful of grapes, something that is a good source of carbs.

Try that and see if that doesn't help you acclimate faster to the earlier time.

Take care, Lynn M.

I used to get this, too. It really doesn't take too long to adjust, it didn't for me... maybe a week or so? So don't let the getting winded discourage you from getting up early - it is better to work out first thing in the morning than any other time of day.

Good luck! :)

I work out in the mornings, but to be honest I do have more strength and stamina in the afternoons. It helps me to eat a handful of grapes and maybe a piece of string cheese or two before I start my workout. Nothing too heavy.

I don't remember being short of breath, but I did have stamina issues and needed to take longer breaks between weights sets. I did adjust though. The key for me is making sure I get enough sleep. It did take a few weeks for me to adjust to mornings. The biggest issue for me was I'm just not a morning person! I have been doing mornings now for three years so if I can do it, anyone can do it!

I am a morning exercisers too. I ((((LOVE)))) working out in the mornings and always on an empty stomach I have TONS of energy. If I miss my morning cardio workout I usually TRY and do it after work. I find I lack the energy most times, UNLESS, I buy a pick me upper like red bull. Now, as far as strength training, I can do afterwork/evenings, piece of cake ;) but cardio after work, hm....that’s another puppy x(

Stick with It, if you can :) I realize that mornings is not for everyone, and too, you must remember that this is new and your body needs to adjust, right? Your body will catch on and you’ll find yourself loving the morning, especially the morning air it’s great :) Just me .02cent. Take Care!:)

I read that changing the time you exercise is a form of cross-training. Your body adapts to whatever time you consistently exercise. Hence, by changing the time, your body has to work harder to adapt.
