Question About "The Step"

I just bought the full size original step. On the stepping surface there are two indents that run not quite the full length of the step. They are the width of my thumb and are about 1/3 of the way in from either side of the step. Is this normal? Is this how all of these steps are made? I expected that the stepping surface would be solid hard plastic under the black nonslip rubber.

Anyone understand what I am talking about?!?!

I just glanced over at mine. It has two indentations down the center also. Look at the back. It's from the way it's molded.
