Question about gym classes

OK, I have not worked out at a gym in over 15 years - mainly because I really prefer to workout alone at home and also because I feel that I get GREAT workouts with my girl, Cathe. So, I just overheard a conversation between two co-workers about classes that are offered at a local gym and I started wondering how these classes compare to Cathe's (or other "advanced" workouts from someone like Gin Miller or Mindy Mylrea). What are these people getting when they go to the gym and take part in the group exercises? Are they comparable in intensity to Cathe? Just wondering.............

Hi!
I think that what you get when you take a class at a gym is that you are being pushed by the fact that there are other people in the class that you don't want to quit in front of or perform badly in front of, and that pushes you to go harder. At least it does me.
The spin classes and cardio kickboxing classes that I take at my gym are the hardest workouts I have ever gotten, including Cathe's workouts. In fact, I doubt that there is anything quite as intense as a real spin class. Nothing against Cathe, of course. Her workouts are very intense.
I am a firm believer in gym workouts....

I just quit my membership because I felt like I was getting a better workout at home with Cathe:) I have to admit though when I took a spin class it was tough}(, but it was also boring at the same time.

If you can have both, it's best. Tat way you're never up a creek if one of them gets taken away. Try to add outdoor stuff too (walking, running, biking).

I found what Trevor says to be true, in most of my local gyms, but not all. Some classes are wimpy. I mean low energy in comparison to Cathe's (they are there for a purpose).

Cathe is also exceptionally good at instructing and cuing. Do some trial days at gyms before signing anything.

Hi Connie!!
Good point about outdoor activities. It helps keep you out of a rut.
I really wish you could see the club I go to. I am pretty lucky. The instructors are just awesome and the classes very intense, except one that I can think of that seemed to incorporate hip-hop moves into the workout.
We have a rock climbing wall too and that is soooo cool!
Take care and you look awesome!! I checked your site out the other day.

Hi!
Sorry you found spin boring. I think that's the instructor's fault. Spin is supposed to be about visualization as well as physical intensity. This keeps you in the workout mentally also.
Trevor :)

Oh Trevor you don't have to be sorry, maybe your right that it was the instructor's fault. It also may be that Im really not into bike riding in the first place and it was dumb on my part to take the class:)

Hi Barbara!
I don't think it was dumb for you to take the class. I am glad you tried it. You took it, found it wasn't your cup of tea, and moved on. That's what life is all about, experiencing things, right? :)
