Question about abs

Hi, is there a specific reason abs are always worked at the end of a workout ? I know that with upper body weight training there is a reason for the order of the exercises, does the same go for abs ? I would like to know because by the end of the workouts i'm usaully to tired to give as good form ,and intensity,as i would like to so would it be ok to do them say after the warm-up before the workout? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Mrsscififanec

No, you can do abs anytime you want. I actually superset them at the beginning of my workouts--i.e. if I'm doing biceps I'll do a set of bicep curls & then a set of crunches, curls, crunches, etc.

I took a class on abs some years ago that debunked many myths about ab workouts. As we all know, the number one way to get a six pack is cardio, cardio, cardio.

However, one of the myths they discussed was the working abs every day w/sets of 100+ reps to "shrink the muscle." The instructor said abs should be worked just like any other muscle, and that weights should be used.

I've been weight training for 16 years as of next March & have tried pretty much every ab w/o there is. I took this lady's advice & started using weights. Now I do abs twice a week. I do 4 sets of 15 crunches w/a 45 lb plate on my head (I know, it sounds uncomfortable but really once you get the movement down you can really feel the muscle working), and 4 sets of cable crunches w/about 100 lbs. I started this w/o about 4 years ago, I do have a six pack now & my abs have never looked better.

Like Maximus said, you can work abs anytime. I think they are often placed at the end because abs are used for stability and posture for almost every exercise. If you fatigue your abs first, you may not be able to maintain good posture during the rest of your workout, thereby increasing the risk of injury. Just my guess!

I think most workouts have the abs at the end because most ab exercises are done on the floor. Most people find it to be a natural progression to start with standing work and then floorwork. I find it awkward to get back up off the floor once there. I know I've read on this forum that on Bootcamp, some prefer to do the "Everything but Core" premix and then do the "All Core" at the end because they get dizzy doing the workout as is.

I'm not an expert, but I think that you can do ab work whenever you want.
