pushups or pullups

No! Push-ups are very effective, and will do very well for your upper body as well as pull-ups. They are very much "resistance" exercises, even if you're "only" using your body weight. I've sworn off upper body weights for about a year now, and I'm not looking back.

Flys are what's called an isolation exercise, and is not as efficient an exercise as are bench presses and push-ups which are compound exercises, working multiple muscle groups. You would make better use of your exercise time doing compound exercises.

thanks for answering. i was curious because i thought one reason for going back to cathe is that she does bench press. i alternate every month p90x and cathe. i bought bands with door attachements for p90x. they are so cool!

I got better results using bodyweight exercises, and those incorporating stability balls, medicine balls and Gliders.

I think for the most part, push-ups can replace most chest work quite nicely (with the benefit of working much more than the chest). But I personally will not swear off incline dumbbell work. It's what helps me keep some fake 'cleavage,' and when I don't do it for a while (even when doing push-ups and other chest work) I see the difference (even though some say that you can't isolate the different parts of the chest and they all work together).

You can, however, do a type of 'flye' when doing push-ups. Get some gliding discs (or a plate on carpet, or a microfiber cleanin cloth on wood) and use one under one or both hands, sliding the hand(s) out as you go down and in as you go up. YOWZA!

LOL. You should check out Ross Enamait's book "Never Gymless" It covers a variety of body wt exercises. He took a whole 3 months (I think it was 3)and simply did body wt exercises to see if he would lose anything by not lifting. The answer no. He totally supports the notion of body wt training. He is a former boxer, now trainer. Doesn't box cause he broke his hand too many times. But WOW!! He has a litte training segment there that shows him doing body wt exercises.
