Pushup Challenge May 29

August

Cathlete
Oh man, am I really starting this thread? Is everyone on vacation?

All right, I've started the challenge. 3 times a week I'll do the drills. I can do 10 toe pushups with an angry face ;) and am shooting for 72 by the end of August.

I see that there are 2 ways to condition yourself to do this:

1) Negative pushups - on toes, lower body to floor slowly (10 sec) and then switch to knees for going back. Do as many as you can...2 sets

2) 3 sets of 8 pushups using your step and gradually weaning yourself riser by riser

I never knew 10 seconds was sooooooo long. I have a feeling the "do as many as you can" thing is going to influence me to "do as many as I want," so I'm thinking to do the first way as sort of a primer, and then move on to the second way.

One thing - the arms...are they directly under the shoulder sockets or are they spread apart some?

Cheers to you all!

You go, girl! I've done my chin-up quota for the day, so I have to start on my push-ups - aiming for 300 total. I'm very excited that so many of you are accepting the push-up challenge, and know you'll be delighted with what it will do for your upper body definition. I want to do double my age soon, which will be 112 consecutive.

I started by using the stability ball but I rolled off and slammed my thigh. Ouch, guess I best be careful tomorrow.

Hi! My name is Sue and I hope you don't mind if I join your challenge. I've been working out with Cathe for 6 years and have seen steady improvement over the years with pushups but never able to pump out 41 (my age).

I just completed 25 on my toes pushups without stopping so I have to add 16 more before July 9 (when I turn 42!). If we are supposed to do this 3 times a week, I'll try on M-W-F.

Okay, I'm off to do some negative pushups now. Wish me luck!

Sue

Hi, Sue,

Kate and I both just started the pushup challenge ourselves, so we're new here, too.

That's great that you can already do 25 on your toes. You'll be at 41 in no time! (Woah, I guess you'll have to be since your birthday is coming up! ;-) )

Best of luck to you!

August

Hmm. Now I'm wondering if the time limit for my goal of doing twice my age by the end of August is really reasonable or not. Does anyone know if this is a good goal for me? Of course I want to shoot high, but I don't want to completely miss the mark either! I can do 10 right now - is getting up to 72 in 3 months reasonable?

You CAN do it, Sue, no question.

August and Honeybunch - Thanks for the encouragement!

I just have a few questions: How do you incorporate your pushup training with the rest of your strength training? Do you do pushups on the same day as chest work? Do you do some back work on pushup day to keep yourself balanced? Am I overthinking this?! LOL Any advice would be appreciated.

Sue

Honeybunch,

I did my 76 pushups a few days ago...just didn't have time to report that I did them. I did 15 without stopping and then had to take a breather and then continue til I made it to 76. I know I cheated as I am not suppose to stop so today I will work chest/back and try to do 22 without stopping and keep building myself up until I can actually make it to 76 w/o stopping.

I'm a big believer in recovery (and in not overtaxing a touchy shoulder), so I do my push-ups and chin-ups (I'm in that challenge also) every other day, and coordinate them with my other resistance workouts (whether they be chest/back, lower body, or shoulders/arms). I will either do them right before my workout, or earlier in the day.

There have been times when I've ended up doing chin attempts two days in a row (that bar was just too hard to avoid!) and my performance definitely slipped.

Kathryn -

Thanks for replying. I DEFINITELY will not attempt to do pushups on back to back days but was also wondering if I should focus on pushups only for chest work (skipping the chest presses and flies for now) or do my pushups before the rest of my weighted chest work? Doing pushups alone sounds boring but if it'll help me make my goal of 41 pushups by the end of June, I'm willing to do it. On the other hand, I don't want to needlessly torture myself! }(

I want to join this, but I think I will have a tough time getting there by my birthday, which is 2 months from tomorrow. I'm GOING to try though.

I can do 8 on my toes right now, and I'll shoot for just my age in push-ups (34). I've been pretty slack with my workouts lately, so this is just what I need!
