We plan on going this winter!! Can anyone out there who has been there make any recommendations on what to do, or see, or eat, or anything?? We're staying at the Plaza Pelicanos Grand Beach Resort. Has anyone stayed there?

Thanks for any recommendations, or advise or words of wisdom!

My husband and I went for our tenth anniversary a few years ago, and it was great! We stayed at a quaint little place called Dreams Resort, and we never left the beach, so I can't help you with things to do. Your post just brought back good memories! You're going to love it there.

We went last year and my favorite thing was a zip line tree top tour. I was scared to death at first, but really had fun once I went down the first zip line. We stayed at a resort along the Nueva Vallarta beach area so we spent a lot of time on the beach and rented a jet ski. Also one evening we did one of the sunset cruises. I also enjoyed the sculptures along the sea wall in the down town area. Can't wait to go back again.

Here was my fav restaurant !

Make sure you go hungry and are ready for loads of proten. The salads are good and different. I was amazed at the price }(

We had fun just running around downtown and also hanging out on the beach at one of the hotels that has the restaurant on the beach and little umbrellas with chairs and waiters that will bring the drinks to you.

Just a bit south is a Tequila factory tour - that was very interesting to see how tequila is made. I think they had over 100 different tequilas, some even flavored like chocolate.

And a hint we got from our friend who owned the "casa" we stayed at -don't purchase anything on the day one of the cruise ships is in port. All the locals raise their prices until the ships are gone.

You will definitely have a great time. I can't wait until we go back.

My DH and I went 10 years ago for our first anniversary. The weather and the beach were great, we wondered into town for one day and it was just okay. I was about 6 weeks pregnant and morning sick like crazy, so I was especially sensitive to smells. Be careful with jewlery purchases, there's a lot of fakes out there. Also, be careful with your cab drivers if you use them. They can be dangerous. Ask the hotel for recommendations. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Wow, I totally disagree about the cab drivers being dangerous.

I went to PV just this June with my two teenage boys and shared a condo in South Town (Romantic Zone, Los Muertos beach) with another single mom and her teenage daughter. We had an absolute blast! And never had a concern with our safety.

I'm not familiar with your resort, but I see it's in the Hotel Zone. It's a 3 or 4 dollar cab ride to the Malecon (downtown). Buses are safe and dirt cheap and the ride is 5 pesos (50 cents).

We did the El Eden Canopy Tour, the Outdoor Adventure, rented dunebuggies (Pathfinder) and jet skiis on the beach. I would recommend them all.

Our food choices were all South Town restaurants. My preference is for the little lesser known places and I tend to stay away for touristy hot-spots. The exception: PiPi's is located about 3 blocks inland from the Malecon and I could recommend them. If the glasses they served margaritas in were any larger, you could bathe in them!

www.tripadvisor.com has a wealth of imformation - their forum is very good and you can ask away there.

One caveat: beware the Timeshare sharks. They are especially maddening at the airport where they approach you asking if you need a taxi.

If you want any more info, you can e-mail me at [email protected]

Thanks so much for all the tid bits. I too like the smaller lesser known places generally. That's why I'm trying to pick ya'lls brains! We went to St. John a few years ago and the best food and drinks were at a place that was recommended by a co-worker who coincidentally used to live there... Keep it coming!!

Okay, I'll preface this with the fact that we had 3 teenagers and a limited budget. These are not fancy places, but quaint and the food was good. All are located in South Town:

Machi’s BBQ - dinner
Cafe Bohemio - dinner
Cuates y Cuetes - right on the beach at the pier - breakfast/dinner
Mama Delores - breakfast/dinner
Joe Jack’s Fish Shack - dinner
Memo’s Pancake House - breakfast, obviously

La Bodegita del Medio is a fun place on the Malecon. It's Cuban food and they have a live band and salsa dancing after 9pm. We tended to just order appetizers and/or salads because their entrees seemed rather "heavy". I can't salsa worth a darn, but sure had fun watching those who could.

A "secret discount" for the taxis from the airport (which will cost you 3 times as much as taxis around town or even returning to the airport) is to mention Que Pasa at the taxi stand for a 20% discount. No lie, it worked! See http://quepasapv.com/taxi.html for details. I feel badly I didn't eat there.
