Protein Shakes?

Everyone has been really helpful in helping me with my BEING STARVING problem. What do you all think of Protein Shakes? I am reluctant, because it doesn't seem like real food. Having said that, I need to change my diet, and my stomach prevents that, and this may be the only way....
Any opinions?

I like Allmax's Isoflex- tastes good, low calorie, high protein and one of them has real chocolate chips in it!

I started mixing one scoop of protein powder into my 5 oz Oikos Greek Plain Yogurt. It's packed with nutrients and the protein I need after a workout. And it's tasty too.
Good Luck

I use whey protein. I think Isoflex is whey as well. Cathe posted in other threads the exact supplements she takes. I wanted to buy the whey she uses becauses it is the highest quality. Does anyone remember what she posted, or can you point me to that thread.
Thanks.

hungry!

Greek or Icelandic yogurt (Siggi's if you can find it at a health food store near you) or light silk soy milk are what I use to calm my hunger when I am in danger of throwing my diet out of whack. They are somehow very filling. Just keep in mind that while the Greek and Icelandic yogurts are a great source of protein they are generally lower in potassium and calcium than regular yogurt. Soy milk is usually a good source of both potassium and calcium but is lower in protein. Both usually work for me to the tune of about 120 kcal. Hope this helps. I try to avoid protein powders because they usually have artificial sweeteners which have a tendency to give me headaches for some reason.

That's true- they do, although I don't get the headaches. However, you can choose an unflavoured protein powder without any sweetener of any kind. Artifical sweeteners (the sugar alcohol ones) also make me very bloated.

I really like the isopure that Cathe mentioned in the thread regarding supplements. 40 grams of liquid protein to only 160 calories. Plus they are like flavored water so i find them more refreshing after a workout than protein powder. I think there are 8 flavors. Cathe is right- the grape frost is the best! It's all a matter of taste, but in my opinion the Alpine Punch flavor should be avoided like plague! BLAH!

Hi-
I go in spurts w/ using protein shakes ( usually use them when I've decided its time to clean up my diet!) and here's the ones I've found are pretty tasty.

Isopure (ready to drink) Green Tea 40 gm protein for 170 calories
Syntha 6 chocolate peanut butter- 22 gms protein for 200 calories ( this one is Delish!)
BSN-- Lean Dessert Protein-- Chocolate 130 calories 20 gm protein ( I think)
Gold Standard 100% Caseinate Protein.. got banana and it is surprisingly good. 120 calories, 24 gms protein.

I've found the secret to having them be more palatable is to mix them up at least 2 hours ( longer is preferrable) and store in the fridge. Most of them thicken up nicely with just water added. they drink much more like a "flavored milk" as opposed to how they taste when freshly mixed up and consumed right away. ( then they taste kind of watery and grainy, not so good! :)

Hope that helps! Lynn
