When do you guys use protein shakes, and when??

Do you replace a meal for weightloss or add them after a hard weighliftin session as a snack?

I bought a whey protein called "Designer Whey" but have no idea how to use it to get fat loss and gain lean muscle mass.........

any answers and resources would be so appreciated! Thanks!

Hi,

I use MetRx protein shakes or whey shakes after a hard lifting session, usually as a meal replacement for lunch. I started doing this when MetRx first came on to the market 12-15 years ago and I havent stopped. Its helped me build muscle easily. But, as always keep close tabs on your caloric intake (fat loss) and eat protein at every meal (food for that muscle) and try to eat small meals throughout the day. Easier said than done I know but it helps keep the energy level and metabolic rate up.

Hope this helps.

I have a shake (soy milk, banana, ground flaxseed, scoop of Optimum whey protein) before my AM workout. I consider it my first breakfast.

Because my long runs (anything from about 10K and up) tend to suppress my appetite I usually have one immediately after I get home. The shake feels more like a drink than food.

Hi Reba,

I like to drink my shakes right after my workouts(cardio or weight lifting). I have one on my rest day also. I really like Optimum Nutrition Whey protein powder. It tastes pretty good IMO and is not too expensive.

hi,
Protein shakes are not necessary. I am not sure how the whole protein supplement thing got started, but it is a bit simplistic to think protein builds muscle, therefore more protein will build more muscle.

Hi Reba :)

I use Myoplex Light shakes, although for years I used Designer Whey powder. I liked DW a lot but wanted something a little different and something in individual packets (easier to transport) so I switched over to ML. Also I found that with DW, I could not get the shake very thick and that is how I like them. Soy milk and ice worked but I didn't want that every day.

I usually have my shake as my breakfast (which during the week, is post workout for me) or as a snack in the mid-afternoon. I vary them a lot and add different things to make them interesting. For me, it is a good way to stick in some extra low(er) fat protein in my diet.

Christine :)

ETA: Like Aila said, I always have a shake on my rest day too.

I use it in my oatmeal during the week at work. It helps me balance my protein/carbs and makes my oatmeal tolerable. I use Low Carb Biotest grow which tastes like cake batter. It's a little pricey but worth it for me.

Sometimes I will have a shake during the day if I know I haven't fulfilled my usual 100 grams of protein.
