Protein powder ok for kids?

My 2 1/2 year old son loves my protein shake (strawberries and one scoop of vanilla powder). Is this safe for him?

Because my daughter is a picky eater I've made her some protein shakes with fruit and protein powder, but I give her half a scoop at most.

My daughter is older 12 years and is usually running out of the door in the morning and maybe once or twice a week I had her a protein shake, milk, bananna, ice, protien powder. At least I know she got something to fuel her till lunchtime.

Katie,
I see no harm in giving your son a couple sips or a small cup full of your protein shake. Or you could make one for him with just a tiny bit of protein powder.

You could also make him one with strawberries and vanilla yogurt instead of protein powder. :)

My shake has one scoop, so about 25 grams I think. He usually only has 3 or 4 sips of it. Glad to know it is safe for him. Maybe I should call the Pediatrician just in case!

Your doctor would probably advise you to encourage your kid to eat regular sources of protein, which we know he can easily digest, rather than such concentrated sources which are not intended for kids digestive systems. A few sips 'aint going to hurt anyone, however. I still think making him his own smoothies with yoghurt and loads of fruit and milk is the better option, since he'll get o much more in it besides the protein.

Hi,
I really, really do not recommend protein powder for toddlers. If it's 100% natural whey protein without any BCAAs and all, then that should be fine but if it has BCAAs, additives, etc for muscle growth, fat burning (95% powders have this) I really, really would not give it to him. My son loves smoothies but I use Carnation Instant breakfast in vanilla or strawberry. He thinks it's the same as mine. He really does not need all that protein anyway. Yogurt sounds great. Peanut butter, almond butter, cottage cheese, oatmeal, etc are much better. Hope this helps. Happy Holidays!

Lisa :)
