is anyone else out there addicted to protein bars? i started to eat them to get a quick energy boost or snack - they are so convenient. then, they filled a sweet craving. like any refined sweet, i found myself wanting them more and more, and now, i treat them like candy bars. which they basically are! so, i am trying to break my addiction and would appreciate any suggestions. my will power is awful! thanks for listening.

Sorry, I only have them in case I get hungry and I'm not at home. I keep one in my purse and one in my work bag as a "just in case" thing.

I've made the protein bars and rice bars and even started thread on it a week or so ago.

For WWs, the rice bars have 2 pts each, the protein bars have 3 and the granola have 4.

The store bought ones have way too much sugar and are more like glorified candy bars.

Ahhh man, I have soo been there. For a while I was eating like two luna bars a day! It was ridiculous. I had them all worked into my ww points thing, but it was just a bad habit. For me I just can't go there. I am embracing ww again and this time I am going to do it without protein bars or ww's candies. I want to incorporate more clean eating than just focusing on points. The whole moderation thing can be a challenge for me when we're talking refined sugars and chocolate.

Although I'm not "proud" of it, yes I do eat them Mon-Fri for breakfast-they are so quick & easy & can just grab on my way out the door. I am careful though & read the labels well because some are worse than eating a candy bar.

The 2 I like the best are:

Snickers Marathon Low Carb energy bar(PB flavor):
CAL-170/60 from fat
FAT-6g
Sat. Fat- 2g
Carbs-19g (net carb=3)
Fiber-8g
Sugars-1g
Protein-16g

Detour Low Sugar Deluxe Why protein energy bar:
CAL-170/45 from fat
FAT-5g
Sat. Fat-3g
Carb-17g
Fiber-2g
Protein-15g

These are the best I've found that I actually LIKE the taste of!

A free Pria bar came in the mail from our grocery store and can I tell you how foul it was? It was like munching on carboard w/ a bad aftertaste. EW.

susan, which did you make yourself? what recipie did you use?

i started eating them as meal replacers but do have trouble limiting myself with refined sugars, so i like the idea of something i could make myself using whole foods. a recipe would be great.

i do think i need to eliminate all processed brands cold turkey as i am nnot bothered what brand or how it tastes - it is just candy!

Using the Alton Brown recipes from the Food Network website I made the protein bars and the rice crispy bars.

The protein bars came out very well, I've since made them again, and I've gotten a bigger bowl to try the crispy bars again, but somehow the marshmallows keep winding up in my hot chocolate at night -
I'm not sure how...;)

Here is a link to the original thread, which itself has a link to the recipes:
