protein bar

I like Clif Builders protein bars. They have sugars, (so I try to use them sparingly), but they don't have artificial sweeteners or other chemicals. And they don't give me a headache. I also prefer the taste over any other bar I have tried. Plus, they sell them at Sam's Club, so the price is much better than buying them in a regular store.

I'm very interested if anyone has good recipes.

I have tried manyyyyyyyyyyyy protein bars. I don't tend to like fillers and artificial stuff and am also mindful of sugars and calories per bar. That said, I always end up going back to Larabars. They are all natural. You can google them to find a homemade recipe and, if you combine one with fruit, it can really take the edge off of hunger until mealtime. You can buy them at Costco and they come in soooooooooooooooooo many different flavours. They are really good and shamefully cheaper at Target than in Canada. Otherwise, I grab Atkins bars.

hope that helps.

protein bar recipe

Here's a recipe from the recipe section here... I love these, I make them smaller sometimes so they aren't as high calorie and I sub 1/2 cup almond milk instead of the dry milk and water if I don't have it on hand. Anyway, they are delicious, very chewy and taste great. I hope you enjoy!

Protein Bars

5 Tbsp of natural peanut butter
1 cup uncooked old fashioned oats (I used quick oats)
6 scoops of chocolate whey protein
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup non fat dry milk
1/2 cup water (may need more depending on type of whey used) I used another 1/4 cup.

Mix oatmeal, whey and dry milk. Then add peanut butter...the mix will be crumbly. Add the vanilla and water and mix until a dough forms. Mixture will be sticky. Spray an 8X8 baking dish and spread dough with a sprayed spatula or wooden spoon. Freeze for one hour or refrigerate for a few hours. Cut into 9 bars and wrap individually or layer between waxed paper. Keep refrigerated.

Nutritional information: 197 calories, 21g of protein, 7.2g of fat (8% saturated) 13.7g of carbs 1.6g of fiber.

Roselyn--I like the Vega bars. They are not high protein--just 9g--but they are made from real, raw foods including wheatgrass, spirulina, kale, buckwheat sprouts, almonds and dates. Larabars are good, too, and they seem to be a favorite among many here on this forum.

Nicole--Thanks for that recipe! I can see several different modifications to try--almond butter instead of peanut butter, vanilla hemp protein and cacao nibs instead of chocolate whey protein--as well as your substitutions. Looks easy and sounds good. Thanks again!

I like Vega as well (I just looked at one, and it says 10 gm of protein). They just came out with some new ones, but I haven't tried them yet.

I like Nugo bars. They have an organic choc almond that is tasty. I actually like their low carb peanut butter better, and it's 20 g. protein (some of which is from soy protein isolate) for 180 calories, but it's not organic.

Are Vega bars made with organic ingredients?

Thanks Nicole for the recipe, its a keeper. The recipe seems like it would be very easily modified for what I have on hand or special things I would like to include.

Never mind! I tried one of these yesterday after not having had one in ages. It was so sweet I couldn't finish it.:p

I'm glad you all liked the recipe.. lately I've been making them with half the amount of oatmeal and the other half whey crisps just to increase the protein a little more, also I make them into protein bites buy putting them into a 24 mini muffin tin and freezing them that way. It's a very flexible recipe and they always turn out delicious!

I just ordered a sample of these Quest Low Carb Gluten Free Protein Bars They have ALOT of fiber and protein. Not sure how they will taste but when I get my sample i will let you know.

I just got those samples a couple of weeks ago. I thought the brownie one was decent, using the microwave suggestion that came with the bar. The other one almost made me puke, lol. I can't recall the flavor? Vanilla almond or something? Anyway, I really wanted to like it :( because the macronutrients were spectacular! I'd probably eat the brownie one again.

But I tend to go for the more natural ones, too. Even if it means I get less protein. I've found that my body can only process but so much protein at once when it's disconnected from it's whole food source (ie. "isolated"). I'll eat larabars, Luna, or Pure bars. For an occasional treat, I'll eat the Think Thin bars (the ones with less protein, my fave is the mixed nuts dipped in chocolate)..
