problem with squats

I just got back into lifting after a couple of years of slacking off and am having a problem. While holding the barbell, during squats or lunges, my left arm and hand feels like all blood is draining out of it and it becomes very painful. It's a very sharp pain and I have to stop and shake out my arm. Is this common, should I stop doing this excercise or do I need to see a doctor? Thanks for your help!

I'd like to know if anyone has the answer to this too. It happens to me too but it's always my right arm. It really hurts!

Could the way you balance the barbell on your back be pinching a nerve? Sometimes I unintentionally put more of the barbell's weight towards one side, usually my stronger side, and get pain in my upper back & shoulders. If you don't already have one, I would suggest using a barbell pad. Just a few suggestions, hopefully someone more knowledgeable will provide more help.
