Press ups should target where?

Can anybody advise please?

I've never managed to do more than 5 stretched out press ups in my entire life so I keep it to my knees with feet crossed and up in the air. If I try to perform the press up in the stretched out position then my lower back sinks downwards which just doesn't feel right. It seems impossible for me to hold correct form in this position.

When I do perform press ups I have never ever felt anything in my chest area I only feel it around the shoulder muscle region which fatigues me too much for any shoulders section that follows or vice versa.

I've moved my hands further out from centre line, I've moved them further in. What am I doing wrong?

Can anyone please advise?
