preserving your joints??

Yesterday I did a fast incline walk on the treadmill and really worked up a good sweat. I love step, drills, and kickboxing, too, but lately my knees have been complaining in a major way... and I don't want to push it.

There was an article in the NY Times about all these people in the 80s (especially instructors) who did so much high-impact aerobics that they're basically reduced to walking now. One of the people affected was a name I recognized, think his name was Jay Blahnick (sp?), who I think even had some fitness videos out. Anyway, I'd like to preserve my joints while enjoying fitness for as long as I can (I'm now 45).

Does anyone know if a say, 4 mph, level 8 incline walk burns the same amount of calories as a moderate-intensity step w/o (not an imax!)? My treadmill has a calorie-counter, but I don't think it's accurate. Also, any other suggestions for a good calorie burn, that's less stressful on the joints? My DD is urging me to get a rebounder, but I've heard mixed reviews. Thanks all, and Happy Valentine's Day!

I did ruin my right hip joint totally during my marathoning years. I'm 49 and pretty much ready for a new hip. I don't do any impact anymore just spinning or elliptical for cardio. Yoga and pilates are on my daily menu with strength training. If I were you I'd try to do lots of non impact stuff as opposed to impact. That's a lot easier on the joints and still a great workout. Good luck!

Edited to say that Blahnik actually has a great spinning tape!

Don't know the answer to your question, but thanks for the article. It was interesting. My knee has started bothering me, so I have added ellipticals a couple time a week as well as taking spinning classes. I do have a rebounder that I use for a lot of the impact in Cathe's workouts. For example in Kick Max I do the intervals on the rebounder. HTH

I run a lot, and don't really have joint problems, but too much high impact just leaves me tired and sore in the muscles, so I started fast pace walking, too. I have the iTreads, and I do the pace and incline she suggests on the treadmill. I don't get my HR up as high as I do when I run, but it can get up to the same as a steady state step workout like Rhythmic Step. But the only I get there is with the iTreads.
