Premenopause destined to cause weight gain?

In advanced exercisers, is it more common than not to gain weight during premenopause - assuming exercise and eating habits stay the same?
Has anyone seen a general pattern of exercise changes by women who are in premenopause to 'head off' the nasty results?

Thank you for sharing everyone.

I gained in the beginning but once I got my periods straightened out, I started losing again. I think sometimes you have to just wait out your hormones. I just kept up with my usual routine in hopes that all my hard work would finally pay off and it did!!:D

calico?? RE: Premenopause destined to cause weight gain?

What did you do to get your periods straightened out? And how long until the weight gain stopped?

Thanks!

I am "officially" in perimenopause, have been on BC pills for about two years, and lost 60 pounds in those two years with healthy eating and exercise. So, as far as I'm concerned, that "theory" is a load of (insert your favorite word for BS here) ... :) But hey ... we're each different ... maybe I'm just the exception? Who knows ...

I started gaining some flab on the onset of peri-menopause so I don't consider it BS. I considered myself an advanced exerciser at that time but was only doing cardio. It was amazing too, because the weight came on without any change to my eating or exercising habits. I was eating via the Weight Watchers method. It was when I started having other symptoms that I had some medical tests done and realized what was happening.

To answer your question, when I started making weight training a regular part of my exercise routine that really helped, both physically and psychologically. I've also cut out a lot of sugar from my diet, added more protein and nuts, and cut down on caffeine.

Another thing you could do is talk to your Mom and find out how peri menopause affected her. All the reading I've done suggests your body will probably follow suit (not always but most times).

I applaud you for doing the research and asking questions. Please don't be shut down by negative comments from narrow minded people. There are a few like that out there you know! When your time comes, you'll be glad you were proactive.

calico?? RE: Premenopause destined to cause weight gain...

Hi, I was having 2 week long periods and then while on progesterone (which is supposed to lessen your flow) I flooded so badly that I couldn't get protection in fast enough(sorry about the graphics):+ . I was given the option of having an hysterectomy or an ablation (which is an hysterectomy alternative) where they burn off the lining of the uterus . I opted for the ablation. Since I had to fast for bloodwork and for the procedure I actually lost weight before I had it done. Which was nice, so the weight loss started right before the procedure and continued after it was done. 80% of the women that have this done resume with a lighter period lasting only 2-3 days needing only a light pad or panty liner(I use a regular tampon now and even that it too much most of the time), 20% of the women never have a period again. You are not supposed to have children after having it done it thins the uterine lining so much that there isn't sufficient lining to attach an egg to. So they like to do it on women who are done childbearing and preferably within 10 years of menopause (usually around the age of 40). It usually lasts around 5-7 years and since you are nearing menopause you would be close to the end of your periods anyway when it wore off.

Probably waaaaaaaay more info than you wanted but it is nice to be informed. You are only down for day with this procedure in comparison to 6 week for a surgical hysterectomy and maybe slightly less time for a vaginal hysterectomy.

Hope that helps you some.:7
