Okay...perhaps an ignorant question...

I notice that many of you have those cute pregnancy meters on your posts. Congratulations, by the way! I am confused though. The meters extend to 40 weeks. I thought pregnancy was 36 weeks. Can someone kindly fill me in?

Thanks :) :) :)

A woman IS actually pregnant for about 10 months....it's confusing and I had no clue until I started reading about it...It depends on when you start counting...there are 2 ways to count a pregnancy and if you do it the way the meter is doing it, it's 10 months, if you do it the other way, it's 9 months. Wierd, I know. lol

Have a great work out!

Pregnancy is 40 weeks. Which is 10 months. A woman is usually at least 5 or 6 weeks before she discovers she is pregnant, therefore..the "9" months deal.

Your pregnancy officially starts on the first day of your last period - so when you find out that you are pregnant, you are usually considered 4 or 5 weeks pregnant, even though conception only happened 2-3 weeks earlier. So, the 40 weeks is from the start of your last menstrual cycle, not conception.

Also, a woman's month is considered 28 days, so that will add a couple weeks to the total number of weeks.

All in all, it doesn't make a difference. After your 32nd week anything after that is TOOO long!!!!

This isn't an ignorant question... it IS confusing. Erica is correct, in OB, we calculate from the first day of the LMP (last menstrual period). The LMP is used because most women know the first day of their LMP... less know the day of ovulation or conception. Based on 28 day cycles, pregnancy lasts aprox. 280 days from the first day of the last menstrual period (266 post-ovulation). From there, it depends on how you calculate. If you divide 280 by the average number of days per month (~30), then pregnancy lasts about 9 months. If you go by a true lunar month (29 1/2 days), about 9 1/2 months. If you consider a lunar month 28 days, then it is 10 months. It is sooo much easier to refer to weeks pregnant.

Hmmm... counting 9 months from my LMP with each of my pregnancies was more accurate than any other assessment... 9 months and 2 days with my DD and 9 months and 1 day with DS. Ok, it doesn't take must to amuse me. :7
