Precor elliptical owners please check in!

I am looking at ellipticals and have tried quite a few different ones in all different price ranges. I thought I was sold on the Life Fitness but then tried a Precor. I have tried both in gyms and didn't like the Precor as much in the gym but maybe the smaller home ones fit me better. I am trying to decide between the 5.17, 5.19 or the 5.21 (if I can afford it). The 5.19 has the upper body "arms" but a fixed ramp; the others have a ramp that adjusts to varying degrees.

Which model do you have?
Are you happy with it?
Any complaints or problems?
If you were buying over again, would you do anything different?

Thanks.

Which model do you have? I have the 5.23

Are you happy with it? I LOVE it!!:) :) :)

Any complaints or problems? I bought mine last August and I haven't had any trouble with it at all, and it's my primary form of cardio.

If you were buying over again, would you do anything different? No. Like you, I researched as many ellipticals as I could. I was looking at the 5.21 but managed to snag the 5.23 for the same price:) so I went for it! I bought mine in an exercise equipment store where they sold all of the major brands and every conceivable piece of cardio equipment you can think of, and the salesman (who was also a ceretified personal trainer) couldn't say enough about the Precor. The Precor really owns this technology -- they operate in a true ellipse, never allowing your knee to extend past your toes as some machines do.

I prefer the adjustable ramp over the arms. The ramp allows you to work larger muscle groups, thereby burning more calories. The arm thingies don't really do much IMHO. If you want to use your arms, you can always hold onto some dumbbells, although I've never felt a need to do that. Also, the handles have a tendency to throw you out of proper body alignment.

You can't go wrong with a Precor. You'll love it!

Ditto on everthing Michelle said - also have the 5.23 - LOVE IT!!!! I actually bought the Life Fitness first, but everytime I'd pause to tend to a baby or small child, and come back it would totally wipe out my program. They couldn't figure out how to fix it and refused to replace it, so I had them take it back. They said it was a model glitch.

So I found my Precor - so glad that happened because I wouldn't trade my Precor for anything (well, maybe a Cybex Arctrainer, but that's about it.)

Marie1120,

Ditto to all previous Precor accolades (Model: 576i & love it!). I did alot of research on the Internet and at several Fitness Equipment locations. My requirements were programs-auto/manual, moving incline ramp, arms (adds 12% to the workout) but most important was the feel. Company history and direction (new technology) for the future and warranty / servicability are other things to consider.

Check them out; do a short 30 min workout or longer on each (try out the programs & setup -ease of use or not) to help determine your favorite. Everyone is different.

I enjoy mine and also have the Precor Treadmill 9.33i - I think Lorrie has a Precor treadmill also - checkout our workout rooms on Picture Trail }(

The 5.17 fit my budget better than the other models and I love it!

My Precor became an integral part of marathon training for me. I would recommend the model with the cross ramp as it really does emphasise different muscles.

As far as problems go I did have an issue with some squeaking inside the rear housing but with the Precor you get a 1 year free parts and labor warranty. I called the store where I bought it and a guy came out the next day and fixed it by adjusting something.

Elaine - That is great to hear that you love the 5.17! This model is a little smaller (not sure why) and that appealed to me besides the price although if I could get a good deal I would go up to one with more features.

Looks like the adjustable cross ramp is a better way to go with whatever model I end up getting. So far I only tried the 5.19 so need to go back and try more. I want to check out a Cybex Arc Trainer too since I have read good things about these but that is even pricier.

Would love to hear from anymore Precor owners. I am even more convinced that this is a better option than the Life Fitness even though I liked how that felt too!

Need to get my room ready for my upcoming purchase!

I have a Proform 20.0. I love it it has the handles and adjusts up to level 12. I have only gone up to level 10 and that was like trying to get up a steep hill. It also has set programs that range in intensity plus two video games that get easier to play the harder you pedal. I am very happy with mine and managed to catch it on sale. Even better!!! Teresa

Ditto Lorrie and Michelle

I have had the 5.23 for about 4 years, and it's been worth every single nickel. Feature-wise, my evaluation was almost exactly like Michelle's. I do enough upper-body work otherwise so that I wasn't interested in the "arms", and I haven't missed them. I much prefer the adjustable ramp. I LOVE this machine and use it all the time -- it is just KILLER fun with Cardio Coach! :)

They had a sale this weekend and the Precors were 30% off. I loved the display on the 5.23 and Treadmill Doctor's rates the 5.21 as their favorite. Prices were great but I ended up just getting the 5.17 - I thought it was enough of an elliptical for me and my main concern was getting a quality machine with a tested elliptical motion. The extra $500 or $1000 did add some nice features but the 5.17 has enough and I liked the little bit smaller footprint. I need to get the room painted and ready so it will be a while before I can arrange delivery. I wasn't thinking I would buy one this soon BUT how could I pass up a Precor elliptical for under $2000!

You couldn't!! You did good. 5.17...5.23...they're all good. You're gonna love it! Now all you need is Cardio Coach:D

We also have a Precor 5.23 and highly recommend it. As mentioned above, the adjustable cross ramp is preferable to the the arms for use of more large muscles in the same time frame. As far as the arc trainer. I tested it compared to the Precor 5.23 and prefer the Precor for the true elliptical motion, the cross ramp, and no use of arms.

FYI using the Precor without holding onto any thing with arms, and simulating a run, gives your core muscles a decent challenge too.

If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.
