Power Hour

I just did this one for the first time. I put it off thinking that it would be too easy (I've been doing the GS series). Ah, well, I stand before you a very humbled woman. This one kicked my butt!! I'm still trying to figure out why, but it's definitely on my To Do list!

Another one here still trying to figure out why I have to cut my regular weights by half with PH.:) In the 2+ years I've been doing PH, I've manage to increase my weights by VERY LITTLE. Seems wrong when I've improved a lot in other workouts.:( It's all those reps along with the pace and pulse changes. Very challenging! I actually find PH more challenging that MM or ME. But that's just me.:)

PH gets me every time I go back to it.
The first time I did it, I skipped the lunge section (more leg work?!).
I find PH more chanllenging than more strength-oriented workouts, like S&H.

I just did Power Hours today for the first time in a long time. No ball, no bands just pure weights. I am always scared I am going to drop the barbell on my forehead during the last set of slow triceps. I swear, there is nothing left to prevent it!:)

*Sighs in relief* I thought I was losing it! I really enjoyed it, I have to admit (except maybe at the moment when we FINALLY finished the squats, and Cathe suddenly mentions plie squats - I'm glad Cathe, or anyone else for that matter, cannot hear what I said!). And yes, Kathryn, after all of the squats, my jaw dropped when I heard lunges. Can you say OW???

And Pinky - thanks - now I don't feel like a weenie for using the weights I had to drop down to (I started off at my normal weight, then had to drop).

And Susan - that thought was going through my mind too. Especially as I watched my quaking arms lower that bar towards my forhead...

I love PH and just did this one on Saturday. I'm still a little bit sore in my tri's....this just gives a great burn. I'm pressed for time for the next five weeks and am thinking about alternating a week of CTX with a week of Cardio 3x's and PH 2x's a week. I get home too late to workout on Thursdays and Sundays I usually rest so I have time for church and to focus on relaxing.

I think PH is a great workout and it always kicks my butt too! It's so different from straight lifting and really shakes things up! :)

I love the music in PH. Particularly the back portion. The leg work totally kills me. Has anyone counted how many squats in total are in there? How about the lunges?

I didn't count lunges, but once I counted squats: there were something like 120 of them!

Why is Power Hour so different? I don't have it and actually I saw part of it on FitTV the other day and the brief part I saw, they were just lifting heavy weights. I didn't continue watching it because it just looked like a standard routine, but obviously I was wrong. Is it an endurance or strength building workout?

Sophie - I thought the same thing - in fact that's why I posted. It's different in that you work the same muscle group for an entire song without break. The sounds easy enough until you realize 5 minutes later that you are still doing squats (and all manner of squats they are!) with a 40 pound bar bell on your shoulders. I trust Kathryn's count - 120 squats. Just think about that!

And it's the same through out. You start off thinking, "Well, hey, I always use 40 pounds for this exercise" and end up removing 1/2 the weight 1/2 way through because even though you always use 40 pounds - you only do about 1/3 of the reps.

It's very much an endurance workout - but you'll build strength too. I think it's a great addition to a heavy strength routine because it works your muscles in different ways.

Christine,

I don't feel so bad now! I started out using all the weights I normally would and definitely lowered them. Phew! I've only done it once, but I remember feeling good and worked out.}(

Thanks for posting this!:)

Dallas -

And I'll bet you were wondering why you felt good and worked out - when you used a lower weight. I'm still feeling the squats and it's been two days!
