Potty Training

In a few months we are going to begin potty training our daughter. She already knows when she messes her diaper because she gladly yells "Poop". Does anyone have suggestions as to how to start? Recommend a tiny potty or a little seat for the big potty? Thanks in advance.

Ahhh, . . .potty training will always be remembered as one of the most memorable moments in my life, for both the good and the bad. With potty training it was important for my kids to recognize the sensation before needing to go to the potty. We read books that talked about it and both my son and daughter came with me to buy the potty. We decorated the potty with stickers of their choice to really make it their own and then after a really big drink or a snack of rasins, peanut butter, and celery it was time to go and sit on the potty with a show on tv. When she did the deed for both pee and poo poo I made the biggest deal of it and crowned both my son and daughter queen and king for the day. Took them to the store to buy a toy (under $10) of their choice and then took them out for ice cream to solidify the fact that they were both indeed big kids. I used pull ups but I don't believe that they help with potty trianing. They pretty much are just glorified diapers if you ask me. What I would do is make them wear their big kid underwear and then put the pull ups over the underwear so that I wouldn't have to clean up a huge mess. This way they felt was the poop and pee would feel like in their underwear and not like the feeling. This worked like a charm on my daughter and she potty trained in 1 day! The minute she felt the wet on her special panties she made it a point to go run to the potty right away. My best words of advice is to be patient it will come and that things sometimes get worse before they get better. Good luck!!!

It's been a little while for us. We started both girls at age 2 and just put them in real undies (which was a huge thrill!) and took them to go potty every 20-30 minutes or so. We used a chair on the big potty and put the actual potty chair in the van for use while in transit! It took a while to get it down to dry undies for most of the day, but it happened! My biggest words of wisdom would be be patient!!

Good luck!!

Sounds like she's probably ready -- why wait? I have two pieces of advice I give anyone who asks: 1) don't use pull-ups -- I think it's confusing for the kid and just prolongs things 2) buy a bunch of flat matress pads (no elastic), and layer them on the bed -- under the sheet, over the sheet -- so that in the middle of the night you have only to pull off the wet matress pad and maybe put another clean one back on and you can go back to bed (oh, dry jammies to worry about, too, of course).

Good luck!

I haven't started her yet because even though she knows when she poops she is only 20 months. I don't even know how to teach her when she is peeing.

Any books you can suggest for her?

Thanks again.

I don't have any book suggestions, sorry. But, I do know my friend potty trained both of her girls long before they were 2 years old, so, it's possible. If I were you, I'd be finding one of those readiness quizzes somewhere on-line. She may be ready, even though she's so young. If true, lucky you! If she doesn't show enough of the signs -- no sweat -- she'll be ready soon. Good for you for being so prepared!

I have some literature on a 3-day potty training technique that worked well for me. I won't say we were completely done in 3 days but 2 weeks start to finish (including #2!) PM me your email address if you would like me to email it to you.

HI!

You are NOT alone...I have two year old twins (turned 2 yesterday) and my little girl sounds like yours! She says "poopie" before she has to go and waves goodbye to my pee every time I go ;) (My boy is not even close!?) So, I am right there with you!

Lynn - I would love to know your secrets, too! (I don't want to just email you without asking)

Thanks for this great thread!
