Post-P90X Suggestions for Men

Cathlete
Hi all! I got my husband P90X for Christmas, and he is now in Week 9. He has always worked out, but this is his first experience with a structured workout program. He's loving the program and the results. He's begun thinking about what to do once he finishes the program. I haven't done P90X myself, so I thought I'd seek the advice of the educated crowd. What would you recommend for a guy after completing P90X. Should he do something for a while and then return to P90X. If so, how long between sessions? I'd appreciate any suggestions. I have most of Cathe's DVDs, but my husband only has the P90X program and some Bryan Kest and Rodney Yee yoga DVDs. I think he'd be willing to invest in another series if he thought that was the way to go.

Thanks in advance,
Lynda

Hi Lynda,

I'd like to know this answer too. After telling dh about P90X for a couple of weeks, he asked me to order it for him. DH always thought workout videos were full of you know what. But after seeing how Cathe's videos has helped me change my body for the better, it changed his thinking. He also asked what does everyone do after the 90 days? Do they take a short break using another instructor or go through the rotation again? How soon after finishing the P90X rotation do they start it again?

If anyone has any suggestions, please share.

My suggestion would be to look into Turbulance Training by Craig Ballentine (not sure if I spelled the last name right or not). Either that or the book New Rules of Lifting by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove.

These resources in my opinion have some of the best workout programs out there right now. No fluff...serious weight and interval cardio work. Their philosphy is to use more compound movement lifts, ie bench press, rows, pullups, pushups, dips, squats, deadlifts, etc. They aren't real big believers in the need to do a whole lot of isolation exercises since your compound lifts use the smaller muscle groups as well as the larger ones. This is definately a philosphy I will stick with when it comes to any weight lifting I do from here on out.

I've found Turbulance Training to be quite extraordinary. I've really enjoyed his stuff. You can find it at www.ttmembers.com, or turbulancetraining.com. There is a fee associated with accessing his downloads (all pdf files) and discussion boards, but I've found it to be a very reasonable deal considering everything you receive. Hope this helps.

I HAVE THE P90X TOO. YOU SHOULD GO TO BEACHBODY.COM AND SEE WHAT OTHER THINGS ARE AVALIBLE. ALSO THERE IS A GREAT MESSAGE BOARD LIKE THIS ONE THAT HAVE GREAT SUGGESTIONS AVALIBLE.:)

Maybe P90 Masters. Not the X but P90M Sculpt 5-6 would be a great workout to do 2-3x a week and add in cardio on the opposite days. 5-6 is supposed to be full body but it seems light on the legs. Even so, he could still get the upper body workout (albeit in one workout instead of split training) and keep the gains while taking a break (2-4 weeks, maybe??) from the X before returning to it and maybe trying a different rotation of the X...

Thanks, everyone. I'm going to check out the Beach Body site. As much as I'm sure the Turbulence Training is a great book, my husband is much more successful at sticking with a plan that's laid out for him. His free time is so limited, it actually took some convincing to get him to try the P90X, which he now loves. He loves knowing what he'll be doing each day and having it spelled out for him. It's been such a positive experience for him, I don't want to see him lose his momentum. Another DVD series would be a no-brainer. I hope there's something appropriate. How is the original P90 series? Anyone try this? Good for men?

Turbulence Training does have laid out workout programs (lots of them) that are anywhere from 4 week programs to 12 week programs. Those programs are downloadable files...not hard copy books. It was very easy to print out the different programs. He provides the worksheets and everything. Everything is spelled out in great detail, it is definately a no brainer.

In my opinion nothing else at Beachbody compares to the X...not even the Masters series. The New Rules of Lifting book also has detailed programs laid out that focus on fat loss, hypertrophy, and strength. Another no brainer.

Lynda-
If you purchased X from BB then the manual addresses your question nicely... He can take a couple of weeks off of X and do other things that arent as intense and then go back to X and could even do one of the different rotations. There is also a section in the manual that discusses how to use the X as a maintenance program.

Thanks, again, everyone. I think I'm going to present him with the two options (Power 90 and Turbulence Training) and see which appeals to him more. Isn't he lucky to have me doing all this groundwork for him? Ha ha!

Traci-X:

I guess I would have known that if I had read the manual for him, but I stopped short of that! I will take a closer look.
