Possible fraudulent email from "Pay Pal"

Just wanted to warn everyone that I received a suspicious email this evening that supposedly came from Pay Pal. It gave me an email address and said that a request came into them to add this address to my account. It then said if I didn't authorize this/change this to click on a link. I clicked on it and logged into my account, which point I was brought to a "verification page" that asked me for account #'s in order to prove who I am, claiming it was for security purposes...the whole thing just seemed fishy so I obviously did NOT type in any acct #s and logged out. Shut my browser down and reopened it and went directly to the pay pal site where I logged in..and guess what!? NO VERIFICATION PAGE CAME UP!!! I emailed them right away with a copy of the email and closed my Pay Pal account down.

If I ever need to use it I will re-open it at that point but I was so freaked out wondering if someone now had my username/password for paypal and could access whatever accounts I had there that I just shut it down for now. Better to be safe than sorry!

Sorry this is so long but I thought it would be worth the time to warn you all just incase!

RE: Possible fraudulent email from

They're called "phishing" scams and they are set up to look like legitimate business such as Pay Pal, eBay, banks, etc. Companies and banks don't ask for personal information in an email. It's best not to open them at all. They don't take you to legitimate sites. The links are often set up to look like the legitimate site, and the purpose is obviously to get you to give the crook personal information.

I probably get five to ten of these types of emails a week. It's the reason I change my yahoo account so often - it gets annoying.

Unfortunately, there was no way I personally could tell it was fake from the subject line so as not to open it all :-(...I'm just glad I caught it when I did!

Thanks!:)

RE: Possible fraudulent email from

Don't open this or go to the page. this is a hackers way of getting into your account. Sernd it to [email protected].
I have gotten alot of these even from e-bay address. They are not real.
It is amazing what people out there will do to rip people off.Not everyone out there is honest.

Thanks Anne.

It's a moot point now though as I closed my paypal account and never entered any acct info for the crooks but thanks again.:)

RE: Possible fraudulent email from

I get them a LOT also. One tip off from me is that it was sent to an email that I don't use for PayPal. They are usually sent to an hotmail address & my PayPal account is an excite address.

RE: Possible fraudulent email from

Thank you very much for the warning Wendy. I received a similar EBay email in my job. I did not open it.
