Possible foot problem - anyone else experience this?

A couple of weeks ago I noticed a strange feeling in my right foot, on the bottom just below my big toe. The weird thing is that it's not painful, just... different. I'm not really sure how to describe it.

I thought it could possibly be my shoes because they were getting old and I have a high arch. I recently bought 2 new pairs of shoes - a running shoe and an aerobics shoe but I still feel the "sensation".

The best way I know to describe it is maybe a "pulling" feeling. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm scared to go all out exercise-wise on it because I don't want to start experiencing pain so I've just been modifying my routines. It's not getting better but it's not getting worse.

Any suggestions or ideas of what could be happening?

RE: Possible foot problem - anyone else experience this...

Reading your post made me wonder if you might be having an issue with one of the sesamoid bones at the ball of your foot. They are small bones encased in tendons (the patella or knee cap is a sesamoid bone). The function of most sesamoid bones is to alter the direction of pull of a tendon. Anatomically the foot is very complicated but that's what came to mind when I read your post. My answer is probably not much help but it's a start. Hope you get feeling better soon.

I'm not sure if my experience is the same as yours, but when I do more than an hour of step, my big toe feels like its getting pulled down towards my arch. I think (and I'm just speculating here) that is my calf muscle getting tight and pulling my toe down. Not sure, but thats what it feels like. Mine is painful if I workout too long and it only happens on my right foot. Sometimes it feels like a burning sensation.

Hi Debbie, I hope you don't mind me interjecting here....:) That's probably your tibialis anterior talking to you, it works in opposition to the calf muscles which attach to the heel via the achilles tendon. Tibialis anterior points the toe to the nose and inverts the foot so it's also working hard during step. It attaches below the great toe and helps support the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. What you describe sounds suspiciously like tib anterior. HTH
