Hi everyone, this sounds a bit silly but its been on my mind for nearly two years, I visit America every year, and two years ago I walked past a man, to get in to a building that I had an important meeting at, and as I was passing the man he said in a soft voice for me to hear "My my...my my my, my my. Please someone put me out of my misery this American phrase is really bugging me, did he insult me??. :(

Ummmmmmm.... no. I would have to say he was complimenting you. Think of it as the equivalent of "mm..mmm..mmm.mmmm.mmmm...";)

No siree!! Albeit crude, I do believe he was paying you a compliment. I think he was suggesting that if he can't have you he would just like to be put out of his misery.:)

Hey, Fitmum, I have one for you. When I was in London last year, some elegant-looking 40-ish guy on the street started talking to me and my female travelling companion and asked me "have you ever been chatted up?...would you like to be?" I assume that means flirted with, but it was rather odd of him to ask! (I think he may have been a pickpocket, because he made a point of touching the arm of my coat, etc....not in a " feeling me up" way, but in a bit too friendly (or looking for money) way. (Luckily, if he WAS a pickpocket, I had a very safe fanny pack (though for you Brits, I guess I should call it something else). FYI: I declined the invite to be " chatted up," though I maybe I should have accepted, for the cultural experience.

>LOL! What the heck is "chatted up"?
Hi there Rose, chatted up, is when a man makes small talk with you, in the hope of obtaining your name and number to start dating you.
:D
