Cathe/Sheila:

I had a baby 11 weeks ago. I ordered your new videos a few weeks ago and I see you have introduced a new ab exercise called planks (I think.) Anyway, they are extremely difficult for me to do. I have diastasis recti; do you think I should wait any specific time period before I do them? I can do traditional abs just fine.

Hi Angie,

I would definitely get the diastasis closed as much as possible before attempting the plank exercise. Do you know how to get the separation closed? If you don't I would suggest that you purchase Elizabeth Noble's "Essential Exercises for the Childbearing Year." It has the abdominal rehab exercises in it that you will need. Also, until you have the diastasis as close as you can get it, avoid all rotational oblique work. The obliques insert on the seam that is separated and by contracting the obliques, you could further separate the muscles. This also means avoid turning around in the car to check on that "precious cargo" in his / her baby seat.

Hope this helps.

Does this mean I should avoid planks while pregnant?!

(and it's a girl!)
