Ok - I just tried my first pilates workout and I hate to sound like a snob - but what's the deal? Is it really suppose to tone? It was like doing some of those so-called toning exercises that you do at the end of aerobics classes! it was a joke! I can't say I got anything out of it. Can anyone recommend a good one? I have the method, piloates target specific plus with Elizabeth Young. It just seemed kinda mickey mouse? Has anyone gotten anything out of Pilates?

Hi Lynne

You don't sound like a snob at all. Maybe pilates isn't for you. I love them like I never have before. I have lost inches really firmed up my abs thighs butt and hips.I did them a few years ago and didn't think they were great either and then I found an instructor I really liked. I started loving them when I started doing mari Winsor.I love the workouts with the band I have about 5 of her workouts and I have some called the classical pilates and in one exercise I use what is called a circle, magit ring, ect you use it when doing different exercises and you squeeze your inner thighs together wow it sure helps tone there.I have gotten stronger in my core and a lot more flexable. I love doing teasers when you sit in a v with legs up and arms straight out now that works your abs and I like doing the roll over it feels so good on my back.Pilates has given me great abs. How long have you been doing pilates?.Some people don't like them because they say they don't sweat well you don't have to sweat up a storm to get in a workout. That is just my opinion I am sure others don't like them also.

You are not a snob
:) :7 :+

Have a wonderful day

No, I don't think you are a snob either!! I tried Pilates once and just have one DVD. I find it more similar to Yoga rather than a cardio workout. I have started doing alot more stretching lately and adding more Yoga and then Pilates on my easy days. I think variety helps your body alot. I am currently running alot for marathon training, so easy days of Yoga or Pilates seems to help...:)...Carole

Hello,
No you don't sound like a snob. You sound alot like me and probably most everyone else after the first time. I attempted to do pilates on a machine from a reformer (pilates machine) that i purchased from an informal about 10 years ago. After doing the tapes approximately 15 times I gave up! I just could not understand what and where I was supposed to be working. I then attempted the mat classes. Nothing there either. UNTIL I went to a pilates studio and had a certified pilates instructor work with me on the reformer. WOW! 24 hours later I felt pretty sore. It is all about stabilizing the core and proper breathing. On a machine you have resistance so I really believe that one gets a superior workout on a reformer versus the the matwork which doesn't provide resistance. However the matwork is still very good also, but there has to be really good guidance on when to breath in and out, and how to stabilize the core. I loved pilates enough that I bought a clinical grade pilates machine and contrary to what my hubby thinks is worth every penny!!!! It keeps my muscles supple, no more lower back problems and no more therapy for my lower back, and I sleep so much better!

Hi Lynne,

I have been taking Stott Pilates classes for 3 years now and
became an instructor last year. You would get more out of it if
you took a class and experienced the deep adbominal muscle engagement
while doing the movements along with proper breathing. It is much more challenging but again ilates is not for everybody. If there is a studio near you and they have intro to pilates you could try it there. Pilates has helped me to use proper form and get more out of exercise in all other activities including Cathe's workouts.

Go figure but in my Gym, its a hard push to fill up 2 Pilate classes in a week but with Yoga, we just added another class to the week - thats now 6 Yoga classes to 2 Pilate. Other instructors Ive talked to sometimes have the opposite problem. I like them both because I think they both offer very different workouts mind and body wise. How about this "yogapilate"? :)

I used to detest pilates - thought the same thing, but then I tried live classes. I'm getting more and more hooked. Never thought I'd be saying that.
