I am presently going to school for exercise science and I wanted to go ahead and become a certified trainer. I wanted to know which certification should I try to get.

Cathe,

I am also interested in becoming a Personal Fitness Trainer. I have done research into ISSA, ACE and some others. What do you think of these? I have a BS in Communications, but people are always asking me what I'm doing to stay in shape and ways to be fit and healthy. It just seems like a natural step to take.

I just wanted to say that I talked to an instructor last week and she had gotten her certification through ACE and AFAA. She stated; however, that with AFAA, they more or less "rehearsed/practiced" in the morning (receiving helpful hints of what to do or not to do for the practical portion) and then took the exam in the afternoon. This was not done when she took the ACE exam.

I don't know if this helps but thought I would give some input. :)

I'm not Cathe, but I thought I'd chime in:

The most widely obtained primary certification for personal training is the American Council on Exercise (ACE), which offers a basic personal training cert and an advanced Clinical Exercise Specialist cert, for those who have extensive contact hours, continuing education and possibly specialization. I can't speak to the resume-building value of AFAA's personal training cert.

There are also certifications, with intensive pre-testing study, by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and by the National Strength Conditioning Association (NSCA). These are very highly regarded.

Another "gold standard" list of certifications are through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM); these also require very intensive pre-test study.

I'd suggest exploring the ACE personal training certs, both basic and advanced, as your first cert. Beware - there are a LOT of really useless, mickey-mouse certs out there, where they take your money and give you NOTHING of professional or academic value.

Good luck!
