Personal Trainer Certification

Hello-
I would appreciate any advice/info anyone is willing to give regarding personal training. I have always thought about that as a career path, and am starting to explore the possibility of becoming a personal trainer. I would love to do that, get registered in kettlebell, and eventually open my own gym. I come from a medical background, have been working out since I was 14, and love to keep up on the latest trends and equipment. Thanks again for any light you can shed on this subject.

Thanks

Theresa

Hi Theresa,

Welcome to the world of personal training! I am an ACE-certified personal trainer and weight management coach, also wanting to get certified as a kettlebell instructor next year, and working on my ACSM cert.

The first thing I would recommend would be to contact the gyms in the area where you would get a job, and see what certifications they require/accept. There are a lot of "fake" certifications out there, so you have to be careful. Most places accept ACE, ACSM and NASM for sure. You can't go wrong with these. (I'm sure there are other legit certs, I just know all the gyms in my area accept these).

How much time/money do you want to invest? With a medical background and some anatomy/physiology knowledge it would be eaiser for you to do a home program (which is what I did). You can also contact local colleges and schools for programs where you can spend a lot of money, but also get a lot of hands on experience.

Most of the certifying agencies also offer weekend workshops, etc. If you wan't to PM me, I can give you more info on specific questions.

As far as kettlebell certifications, here's a great link:

It's such a great feeling to help others achieve their goals!
