Periods

I don't know whether this is exercise related or not, but I was wondering if any of you guys had experienced anything similar

I'm 17 and started my periods really late. My first three were fine, but then nothing! They've just stopped again. I am aware that my exercise is what delayed my first one, has anyone experienced periods stopping because of this? It's around this time that I added ALOT more weights into my routine. I should go to the doctors, and I will, but i was wondering if any of you had had a similar experience.

Thanks

Zozo - my niece is 17 and she stopped having her cycles for a while due to her weight getting too low. She had recently switched over to being a vegetarian and just wasn't eating enough. My sister worked with a dietitian and she is back to having her normal cycle. I have heard of a lot of athletes also having irregular cycles too. Have you started going to the GYN yet? If not, this might be the time to do it.

Not abnormal at all. All through high school I would miss periods because of sports, and I know that my DD has missed because of her cross country and track. I could go as long as 3 months, and my doctor didn't have a problem with it. It wasn't until I was 21 that I started having a "normal" cycle every month. :)

I actually can have this problem from not having my body weight dip too low(never ever happened to me, I was born overweight I think). But if I work out extra hard, or if I get sick, it can cause me to skip.

It would do no harm to have this checked out, and if you are at a low weight, you might concentrate on eating more calories in a healthy way to get your weight up while you train.

Thank you for the reassurance :) It really does make me feel better. I will go and get checked out just in case, but in a way I am glad that it could just be my exercises. After all, it isn't a hassle that i keep skipping :)

My body weight isn't too low I don't think. I'm 5ft 8 and weight 133 lbs

Thank you :)

Zozo,
I just saw a Reproductive Endocrinologist today about my lack of periods. When I asked him flat out if he thought my exercising had anything to do with it, he said no. However, my OB told me to stop exercising altogether.:confused::confused:

I think seeing a dietitian is a fantastic suggestion, or at least having a doctor check it out. Good luck!

Zozo - Your body weight is good for your height. It's actually right about my target weight and I am the same height.

You might be losing some bodyfat, and adding muscle. Bodyfat carries extra estrogen, estrogen is the trigger for FSH and LH to be release and start the process which ends in your period. So you might have lightened your estrogen, and it may take your body a bit to adjust to your new levels.

18 months ago I was in a fairly bad auto accident. The accident was right before 8 am, and at 11 am I was still shaking from all the adrenaline that got dumped into my system. My period was two weeks late that month because I think my hormones got so messed up from that day my body did not know what to do!

Anyway, it does not hurt to get checked out, but it can be a common thing when you are changing your body composition.
