People...ugh!

So I had an up coming race last weekend that I had trained for since the end of Aug. I run on a daily basis and this run was full of hills so I thought that I better do the training program suggested...which I did...and glad that I did. There were more hills then I could have ever imagined. And I am not talking about steep hills, Im talking loooooong hills that never seem to end! I had no clue what the route was so I had no idea what I was in for. 3 days later, and I still can't workout. The DOMS in my legs is crazy!

The day before the race we were teasing one of DH's friends and told him that he should come along with me. His response? "Sure, I could do 20K. I probably wouldn't be able to walk tomorrow, but I could do it". I really like this guy but at that moment I wanted to punch him right in the kisser. Don't you just love it when people make workouts and races seem easy like anyone could do it? I run 12-15k on a daily basis and this race did a number on me. So you can imagine someone you doesn't run? Puh!

And a question I loved to be asked..."did you win"? LOL Are you kidding me? Do you think I signed up for this race to WIN it? Do you not realize that I am just a everyday runner, running amongest track and feild kids or people who have ran all there lives and ran many races...and you are asking ME if I won. Then when you say "No", it almost makes you feel as if you didn't accomplish anything.

On a brighter note, I did good. My goal was to finish the race in 1:40-1:45 but after hearing many people talk about their timing last year, I thought that I was being a little to ambitious. Non the less, I finished in 1:43, 103 out of 400 runners, 3rd in my age group out of 49 women (30-39) and 16th out of 171 women. The race was 20km long,3 kms of flat,4 big hills and the last one being over a mile long at the end of the race. Not to bad....to bad I couldn't walk the past few days;) Anyway...it was offically the hardest thing that I have ever had to do! Sign me up next year!:)

Great job Lori! You rock!

You should have signed that guy up and laughed at him when he got a DNF or had to walk alot of it!:p

I couldn't even imagine running a 5K race, let alone 20K!!! A huge congrats to you for this amazing accomplishment.

congrats on a great run! hills are the devil, but dont you just love them when they are behind you?

Great job Lori! That's an awesome accomplishment. My husband used to think that way about Cathe until he actually did the Gym Styles last week. Now he thinks she's tough-but not in those words-if you get my drift;) I just smiled my "I told you so" smile and let it go at that.

LOL My dh did GS legs w/ me (my version w/ Tony's pullups inbetween each set) and he only made it through a little over 1/2 of it and he had DOMS for 3 days in his calves!!!! :p Gotta love that!

WTG Lori!! You did great!! Oh, and I hate people like that... I had people this summer ask me about the triathlons- how far the distances are, etc. 1/4 mile swim (oh, that's not so far), 24.8 mile bike (maybe I could do that), and 5K run (how far is that again? Oh, *only* 3.1 miles... SMACK! Then YOU sign up to do it!!

I hope the DOMS subside for you!! Don't let that loser take away the satisfaction of running such a great race!

I couldn't do what YOU did in a million years so, there you go. I think That Guy was just fooling himself and only praying he fooled you. A lot of guys who are past their glory days (i.e., high school) like to believe they could still do what they may have been able to pull off when they were younger and fitter. You're just a reminder that such accomplishments take real effort; a lot more than lifting a beer while parked on the sofa in front of the big screen. What he said was meant to diminish you to make him feel better but, believe it or not, it was more about him than about you. As for all the people who ask if you "win" when you compete and who like to act like THEY could have here's a little story: I make abstract art (or rather, I'm getting back into it after a long break, before which I was quite prolific...). Anyway, I had an instructor in college who brought up the whole "I COULD do that!!!" mindset painters like me hear a lot. She said the appropriate response is "But you DIDN'T." Lots of things look easy but the people critiquing you wouldn't know because they don't even try. Those of us who do a little... "running" (i.e., Cardio Coach on the treadmill!) have quite an appreciation of the awesomeness of your achievement so next time someone insults you with an I-could-do-that remark you can do as my former instructor suggested. Or you can just say "bite me," which would be MY suggestion :p

Lori,

First, congrats on an excellent finish on a not-so-easy course!

With regard to the friend you were joking with, I would take his bravado as nothing more than that—a laugh. Many people who don’t run really have no concept of the distance or the racing culture that exists. I’ve had to explain to a lot of my students that, no, I did not win the Chicago marathon. J They simply don’t know. I tell them I’m happy to have finished strong and healthy. In no way, could anyone’s jokes or comments make me feel as if my accomplishment is diminished.

Bottom line: you can’t let the people who “don’t get it” get to you. In most cases, I don’t think it’s a matter of deliberately malicious intent, just ignorance.

Keep ridin' that post-race high & happy running, :)

"i'm not worthy" i wish i had the dedication to get back to running let alone running a huge race. i think ppl say stupid things sometimes b/c they are jealous!

Congratulations on your accomplishment!

Don't think twice about what that dude said. But how *nice* of him to belittle your accomplishment.

He may be able to 'talk the talk,' but he certainly didn't "walk the walk " (or "run the run,' in this case).

Heck, anyone can claim to be able to do anything. Unless they prove it, I'm not impressed.

(Running an ultramarathon? A piece of cake. And the reason I am not in the space program is because it would be too easy for me. And brain surgery? Sure, I could do it, but why bother?)
